Some experiments has good battle or butchering characteristics. Non-sapient of them may be good pets.

Experimenting in current version not based on genetics. Necromancer may experiment with giant moles and make feathered spider. For more realistic worlds generator may be advanced.

Why necromancers not experimenting in fortress mode or after it? If I turn my fort into necromancers army, they may do experiments and use them as pets. Small experiments may hunts vermins, make webs or doing labours, big and bigger will be good in army, meat production and hunting.
