Vanilla tilesets - what is good with .47.03 ?
« on: February 19, 2020, 06:30:17 pm »

Playing vanilla .47.03 now, and learning ASCII isn't really that bad after all.

But I want to try one of the simple square tilesets and frankly have become confused the more I search and try to figure out which tileset and where to find it.
In the wiki tileset repository there are a few I would like to try, with Aesomatica being an example. Very few have download links listed. The installation instructions look easy enough.

I don't know which will and won't work with vanilla.
Win.10 with 1920x1200 resolution.

I prefer a square tileset with walls that have square corners, not rounded.

Help and suggestions?

Download the tileset to your computer. Each tileset is just an image, so there is no separate download link. (Right-Click on the tileset image and Save-As.)

I don't know which will and won't work with vanilla.

All of them will - the beauty of DF is that there isn't something called vanilla or modded in DF (actually there is but not in terms known by other games). So all tilesets will work; if something isn't recognized by a tileset in a modded version of DF, ASCII will kick in. In unmodded versions it's the same.

I, for myself, prefer Phoebus. Mainly because it was the first tileset I've encountered after people made tilesets for the game (real tilesets not just other numbers and letters).

With 1920x1200 resolution, you can use square tilesets up to 24x24. However, if you are running in windowed mode (instead of full-screen), I think Windows puts a border on the sides of the Dwarf Fortress window. So if you play in windowed mode, the maximum is 23x23. You can use larger sizes, but it will get scaled down which might not look so great. With the DFHack modding system, though, it can allow you to run larger tilesets with it getting squished down.

I prefer a square tileset with walls that have square corners, not rounded.

If you want a 20x20 tileset, I think Humble Classic is a good choice. Its walls are only slightly rounded. It's pure ASCII.

If you want a 16x16 tileset, Tergel. It has cool walls and replaces some characters with graphics.

Also, I don't really like the default color scheme so much. Lee's, Yet Another Natural, and CowThing all look pretty good. CowThing is the color set used by the Tergel tileset.

ASCII is not equal to Character. ASCII is a specific, US-centric, 7 bit character set, or at least used to be, while DF uses the 8 bit CP437. If there is an 8 bit ASCII set, it most definitely isn't the CP437 one (but possibly with contents equal to Latin-1).

Taffer 18x18 looks nice on my 1920x1080 laptop monitor.  Comes with a couple of variations and a nice selection of color schemes.
I like that it replaces the smiley face with a nicely designed "d" for dorfs. Always found the faces weird once visitors show up and there are several species wandering about.
