This proposal I made close to 10 years ago is still relevant today: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=70552.0
It gathered 84% approval in the poll back then.

I would hope that while we're in a bugfixing phase with more frequent releases, Toady could add this option to remove automatic digging cancellation and the corresponding warnings for damp and warm stone, for those of us who like the extra tension and challenge of digging without knowing what disaster you can trigger. You took a lot of precautions when digging back in the Boatmurdered era... and it was !!Fun!!

To quote one of the thread participants who managed to flood his fortress in the only remaining way this can happen accidentally now (ramps or stairs - assuming this is still a possibility in 0.44 and 0.47):
On the plus side, the intensity of the drama from an unexpected flood and trying to rescue stranded dwarves on landings was incredible.  If I had the option, I'd turn off the warm/damp stone warnings.

In data/init/announcements.txt, there are these two options to cancel the undesignation.
[DIG_CANCEL_WARM:A_D:D_D:P:R]
[DIG_CANCEL_DAMP:A_D:D_D:P:R]

Very useful for digging out large areas above magma.

But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

But it still cancels the digging so you have to redesignate. Warm and damp rock needs something extra beyond what you can do with announcements.txt

It ought to be controllable in-game, as most of the time you'd want to be warned (unless you're intentionally don't want a safety net), and it's only sometimes that you "know" it's safe (and as far as I understand the new slow aquifers expands the range of reasonable "safe" cases).

It could work as an overall Option, but it would probably be better if it could be a designation option, so you'd explicitly change the setting for the digging you want to be performed regardless without halting all the other digging operations during that period.

While on the subject of digging control, I'd also propose the ability to specify whether adamantine should be mined or skipped. The use case is when you're digging around an adamantine pillar that's already discovered, and you want to find the shape and dimensions of it to determine which parts are safe to mine. Currently I dig a rectangular outline tunnel at what I've determined is a safe distance from the pillar (potentially with a bazillion hot stone interruptions if it's the level above the magma sea) and then dig away one tile of the inner rectangle at a time, manually excluding the adamantine revealed. It would be a lot easier to just tell the dorfs to mine out the area but leave the adamantine alone.

What there really ought to be is a way to say "Dig and ignore damp stone". This way, digging under a river/ through an aquifer would be less of a pain in the ass demon.

Toady & Threetoe are in the process of planning out how to help make DF more accessible to new players as the steam release approaches, and the UI is getting slated to be overhauled. If I'm not mistaken, a part of that is moving some stuff from the init files into the in-game options menu / orders menu. It would be nice if they also expanded some of the options as well to include things like "Don't un-designate any tiles" or "Don't un-designate damp tiles only", assuming that they are in fact moving some init file stuff to in-game.

...
While on the subject of digging control, I'd also propose the ability to specify whether adamantine should be mined or skipped.

I feel as though something like this would be rather simple to add, as we already have the option to designate only ores, so to have the inverse as an option would be nice, and it could also apply to other ores.

What I'm requesting is a global option to have no safety net at all, so dwarves dig straight into lava or water (as @Shonai_Dweller pointed out, currently there's no way to prevent the tile from being undesignated, you can only disable the related announcement). Hardcore mode, if you will.

However I can see a use for a special digging mode that turns off the safety net even if you have it enabled globally, so I support that idea as well.

Swapping designation to a "ignore heat/dampness" option, the same way as automated ore mining, would be the easiest, least disruptive way. Colour the designation something dangerous looking so you can't get it wrong (or will know exactly what you did wrong when the magma engulfs your fortress).

We're going back to my suggestion, but yeah, that works.I guess it could be a toggle in the [d] menu, to encompass all different mining designations?

"a" works well enough I think, it's all standard digging (although with a UI revamp on the way I guess it's all new fangled concepts like "right-clicking" and stuff from hereon).
