Caverns and ground depth on world creation

Hello everyone,

I created a new world with advanced parameters (not villains release but the one before).
I added more rainfall and temperature because I wanted a savage shrubland+jungle start (want Giant Rhinos I don't know why only that I want them).

Then I also reduced the caverns to 1 to hopefully improve FPS (2x2 embark) and increased the number of levels above first layer to have some more room.

What I realized is that my whole ground is not very deep. There is not many layers until I reached the magma sea. Does everyone know if that is tied to the cavern layers number setting or was that just random because of elevation?
Also don't have Iron only copper and silver but I guess this will be more interesting of a game try going leather armor (and many deaths) with the surviving veterans getting better traded stuff and relying on war animals. Animals are also bad for FPS but I try going low numbers and put them on restraints.

Side question: Can you pick fallen fruits and other items out of murky pools without draining them? Can I do it with trained swimmers? It looks ugly with all the stuff inside the pools.

If my brain isn't betraying me, I think the value you want to increase is " Z Levels Above Layer 1 " in advanced worldgen, to increase the number of levels between the embark level and the top of the first cavern.
If you make that something like 50, it should add that many in between.
As far as your metals go, that's a more complex answer, but essentially the layer type determines the metal type.   
Iron bearing stone (Hematite, Limonite, Magnetite) appears in sedimentary layers.  Additionally, Hematite also appears in igneous extrusive layers.

Yes I increased that value to 15 before my world was generated.

My question is more if it only modifies the distance from surface to cavern or if the number of caverns or that setting also change the total number of stone layers from surface to 0?

I'm not sure what you mean by "from surface to 0" but perhaps this will be helpful?

If you reduce the number of caverns you remove the number of Z levels that would have been associated with them, leading to a shallower world. If you only want a single cavern but don't want it right above the magma sea you should increase the distance between the magma sea and the "3:rd" cavern in the parameters vjek referenced.

Note that a bug causes candy spires that should have reached cavern 3 or cavern 2 won't appear at all if cavern 3 and cavern 2 are removed. Since the release notes (or the bug tracker) doesn't mention that this bug has been fixed we can assume it hasn't been.
