Aquifer Smoothing Rules
« on: February 03, 2020, 06:29:56 pm »

I decided to try fighting the light aquifers this time instead of cheating, and planned my fort around having a particular stone layer available. It wasn't damp when I first put stairs thru it, but when I started digging out rooms it turned out to be an aquifer. I tried smoothing the walls but it looks like the water is still coming. Do I need to smooth the floors as well and rebuild the stairs? Or should it work and I just underestimated how much water it produced before smoothing? I got pretty lucky with this embark, hopefully it's not doomed.

Check the z levels above (adjacent to mined out tiles, shut tiles like the ceiling wont flood) for any exposed ones and replace dirt with constructed walls would be the firm advice, as those can bleed aquifer water too and can't be smoothed (but thankfully easy to dig out fast) - is a common hotfix to mysterious aquifer leaks.

As you built the stairs, the water could be flowing through and hitting the bottom without you noticing.

Most aquifers are found in the soil layers, so look there, as FantasticDorf suggested. You can check what kind of stone your walls are made of and check the wiki to see if it's one of the few aquifer supporting ones, but it probably isn't (though smoothed walls are nice, so it's not an entirely wasted effort).
