Dwarven Clans

Have clans with surnames that specialize in a single labor, like swordsdwarfship, wood burning and mining. The clans would be randomly generated, as would the clan positions like the leader and work administrator.

As dwarves (and largely the Unit list) are already sorted by their professions, what would be the point of also tacking on a "surname", which would actually be a guild by another name?

It would sort them by skills, as they can still be trained in skills not their clan's specialty.
Most migrants would arrive as peasants or with some skill in similar skills to their clan's like wood burning and furnace operating, or leatherworking or clothesmaking.

It would also replace their last name.
Clans can have duplicate specialties, tho.
