For instance if a dwarf has been wounded a lot will he have a higher pain tolerance than before he had been wounded?

I don't believe so, at least I've never heard of that being the case.

Willpower is the attribute associated with pain resistance, so increasing that is the way to go. Per the wiki, miner, woodcutter, fighter, crutch-walker, pump operator, swimmer, and "concentration" skills will train willpower.

I suppose, insofar as fighter skill goes up with attacks received as well as dealt, a much-wounded dwarf would probably have higher fighter skill and thus (slightly) higher willpower, giving slightly better pain tolerance... but that's not what you're talking about.

Alright. Thanks for the explanation.

I suppose that it’s good enough that increasing fighter skill would increase pain tolerance, rather than it being its own stat/skill.

If pain is considered a syndrome, the disease resistance attribute would have an effect, but nothing trains that.
