Can I change Goblin Ethics/Pain Tolerance
« on: December 16, 2019, 06:30:40 pm »

First of all, can pain tolerance be improved? I thought it'd be weird if a veteran with dozens of scars from countless battles would pass out just as easy as any regular schmuck.

Also, I know that the races can be changed in fundamental ways, for instance a while back I found a short guide on how to make goblins need food and drink. So can I, for instance, change goblin ethics to be not irredeemably evil? I just find it a little weird that a sapient race should be locked into its morals. Their values, of course, should largely stay the same. After all, there should be a "main enemy" to the game. Basically, I want to make goblins similar to belligerent, violent humans.

Also, if I did change their ethics, how would this affect the game? I'd think that demons may have a harder time keeping control of them, considering their differing morals.

Yes, pain tolerance can be lowered. Funnily enough, if you look at the tissue and combat rebalancing mods in Ah, the trick to goblin evilness in DF isn't so much amorality as that they just don't really get happy thoughts from altruism. So, you will need to adjust the variation of the personality traits to have higher or even regular variance(so just personality tags for that). I don't think it affects the relationship between demons and goblins if you change that.

As for the pain tolerance... I am pretty sure it can be changed if you really want to, to the point you can just add the [nopain] tag, but I just wanted to add that it isn't necessarily more realistic. The type of pain that makes you faint is really intense, and I seem to recall mods that make DF more realistic actually make the bodies be more sensitive to pain(which makes sense if you think of pain as a protection mechanism rather than a weakness). You might however want to take a look at the adrenaline reaction in some of the combat mods. This one has one.

Remember the old versions where chipping the bone of the dragon's second toe, left foot caused it to fall unconscious, doesn't happen any more. Pain was nerfed.

I might just change that. Looking at the wiki, I may be able to also change their ethics like whether or not killing neutral sapients is acceptable. I'm thiking that I won't alter anything to be less ethical than humans. So if humans find something acceptable, then why would this little green asshole think it's not?

I'm not really asking whether or not I can change pain tolerance in the files. What I'm asking is whether or not creatures naturally get a higher pain tolerance from sustaining pain. For instance, if a dwarf fights many battles and gets many wounds in the process, I would think that he would be better able to deal with the pain.
