Marketplace
« on: December 12, 2019, 01:47:18 pm »

Hi everybody,

is there any guide teaching how the marketplace works? I am a beginning player and my first attempt at trading ended in total frustration.

First a black panel appeared where somebody - perhaps a caravan leader or the like - seemed to be talking to me. After a while he tired of our meaningless conversation (which doesn't surprise me) and he left muttering something about meeting next year. Thereafter, I suspect a caravan was located in my 5-tile marketplace building, but all my attempts to offer something for sale were vain, perhaps because the items I had ordered my dwarves to move in there were totally worthless.

The marketplace seems to be the only routine I can't figure out. Any samaritan out there willing to help a newbye?  :)

Did you order your broker to the depot using the option on the depot building?

Did you get to the trade screen after the broker arrived? (Opening the trade screen will grant the broker enough appraiser skill to view the goods' values if the broker didn't already.)

Make sure you use the "trade" button once you've highlighted the goods you want to buy and sell. The "offer" button gives your items as tribute to the trader's civilization.

Try to offer around 1.5 times the value of the items you're buying, as the merchant intends to make a profit. Trade items a few at a time to increase the merchant's mood, allowing for increasingly better deals.

Be careful not to trade wooden items or items decorated with wood to the elves, as they will pack up and leave immediately. (Unless you want to start a war with them, in which case doing this every time they show up is the best way to accomplish this.)

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

Set a broker in Nobles menu.
q and select the tading post.
r to order the broker to the trading post
t to trade when he gets there.

You can ignore the outpost liaison, or read what he says and follow the on-screen prompts to order stuff for next year. Not too important (you can read the news he brings on the c world map screen).

The "market place" is called "Trade Depot" in fortress mode (there may well be market places in adventure mode settlements (probably human, in that case, but I don't actually know)), so using the name DF uses makes things easier to understand.

Note that the first step is to order things brought to the trade depot, which is typically done immediately after the announcement of them arriving. The next step is to wait for the stuff to be hauled, the caravan actually finishing unloading, or the warning that the caravan is soon to leave. You'd then trade (and it's possible to let anyone trade, if your broker is otherwise occupied).
