Red Eclipse 2 is a free, open source arena shooter based on an updated version of the Cube 2 engine known as 'Tesseract'. It has new graphics, sounds, and a completely different design philosophy from its predecessor. It is quite unique, especially compared to the thousands of FOSS Quake 3 clones.

It has a very detailed character customization system, as well as a great movement system that lets you pull off all sorts of acrobatics, like wall jumps turning into flying kicks. It also has twelve weapons, and a few of them have pretty interesting alt fires. Probably the coolest features it has, however, are all inherited from Cube 2. It has exceptional networking, allowing players with high pings to play mostly without issue, and a live map editor where multiple people can collaborate on creating or playtesting a map in 3D. Or both at the same time.

Red Eclipse 2 can be acquired in two ways. You can join the official Discord server and ask for a Steam key, or you can download 1.6 from their site, and change "REDECLIPSE_BRANCH=stable" in the batch file used to start the game, to "REDECLIPSE_BRANCH=master". However, keep in mind that the devs occasionally run official servers for the Steam version, which usually lags a few versions behind the master branch.
