Egglayers is bugged (animal people, starved to death elkbirds). But workshop for transforming egg into baby creature will work.

Or...fix the bug?
Why would Toady make a workaround when he can just fix it? He's not a modder.

how about just add non-standard incubation in general, since things like turtles just bury their eggs in the sand and leave iirc...

Hopefully summoning mechanics (of the upcoming version) will allow us a mod workaround doing what dermeister suggested. Still, non nest-box incubations need to be a thing sooner or later, especially since we won’t be able to steal wild animals’ eggs before that, and stolen dragon eggs is an extremely prevalent fantasy trope DF 1.0 can’t do without.

Just add a token that lets eggs hatch with no incubation.

That is a very bad idea, eggs go into stockpile and then hatch on us.  Then we have a population boom that crashes the game.

There are already limiters in place that prevent excess populations, sentient or otherwise, so i don't know how you came to that conclusion.
Besides, if you don't want excess animals just prevent them from breeding by keeping the males seperate from the females or by culling the males. Just like we do it IRL.

Honestly everything to do with eggs is currently way too underdeveloped.

Firstly, in DF eggs are fertilized at the time of laying?(??? wat?)
Secondly, everything in DF are chickens and lay unfertilized eggs... Despite most things IRL not even laying unfertilized eggs.

Rimworld at least got eggs right.
