Ebony

Nobody knows when magic first appeared. It could have been during the days of the Pharaohs, when priests of Thoth and Osiris and Ra devised rites that would banish death. Perhaps it was in some long-forgotten moment of prehistory, or in one of the countless eras before humans roamed the earth. We have had rituals for as long as we can remember, to empower ourselves and to keep the monsters at bay.

Everything changes and everything stays the same. Nowadays we're ruled by politicians rather than sorcerer-kings, and guns have brought the most brutish creatures into line. We've made magic our own, thoroughly tamed it and civilized it until we learned to ignore the shadows under our windowsills and the wolves howling at night. We surround ourselves with wicker golems, summon demons with circles printed off the internet, even call the afterlife using burned-out telephones.

We've almost forgotten the things that are too powerful for us to control.

This is a game about occultism and dark magic, set in an alternate version of the modern world. Players will probably end up conducting sacrifices, wielding horrible ritual implements, and summoning creatures from beyond the stars.

As you may suspect, crafting, performing rituals, and uncovering ancient occult secrets will be important aspects of the game. Ebony has entirely granular magic, which means you'll be able to tinker with everything that goes into a ritual. Players are encouraged to experiment with their own workings and magical practices, using whatever tools they have on hand.

Of course, there will also be more standard things like exploration and combat.

Ebony will be run on a discord server rather than the forum itself. I'll also be responding to actions individually instead of writing complete turns, which means that the game can essentially run in real time.

I'll be using channels strategically to ensure that everyone can play the game at their own pace. Feel free to go as quickly or as slowly as you like.

I'm currently enjoying a month-long winter break, which means that I finally have enough time to run a game. I also don't have much else to do, so chances are I'll be around a lot.

I won't make any promises about what happens when school resumes, but I would like to keep Ebony running for as long as I can.
