Dwarves won't wear all assigned armour
« on: August 02, 2019, 04:25:05 pm »

My new recruits won't wear all the armour assigned in their uniform, like only some gauntlets and a helmet, but thats it. I am completely sure that i have enough armour (and that they can reach it), so where did i mess up?

ps: why am i a "escaped lunatic"?

Heyo!

- Are your uniform designations set to "replace clothing"? Dwarves will refuse to wear certain of their armor pieces, such as their boots, if not.

- Have your dwarves been raiding other settlements? There's a recent bug that messes up equipment sometimes when your dwarves go raiding.

- Is the armor you want your dwarves to wear unforbidden?

Don't take the "Escaped Lunatic" tag too seriously; it's given out to all new users here. You'll become a "Bay Watcher" soon enough.

Boots and gauntlets are the armor types that usually have a problem; conflicting with shoes and mittens. If they are not picking up other armor items, it might have to do with the assignment of the uniform (or that raiding bug).

Do you know that, if you create and assign a uniform to dwarfs, then change that uniform (in the uniforms screen), then it will not change the uniforms previously assigned to the dwarfs? You would notice this if you look in the 'e'quip screen at one of these dwarfs, they will not have all of the items that the modified uniform has. If this is new info for you, then just assign the new uniform to the squad again.

If you have been raiding, try this:
- create a new uniform and add no items to it (a 'nothing" uniform)
- assign that uniform to the entire squad
- go to the main game screen and unpause for a moment (not sure if this is needed but it will not hurt)
- go back to the military screen and assign the old uniform to the entire squad.

If none of that works, do you see the green checkmarks in the 'e'quip screen next to the dwarfs?

Dare I say, most of us that were escaped lunatics, are still....?

But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Thanks! For some reason my dwarves think it is a good idea to wear a crap ton of clothing(I forgot to make them replace their clothing with armour) in a "hot" embark. Oh well.
Thanks for replying so soon,too!

Clothing adds armor too. I have seen strangely silken robes with old defense value 0 to deflect some birds' bites. Most probably a result of some overhaul of deflection in combat mechanics, which sadly is not well consistent. Angle of the hit maybe? Still, the old wisdom is to use leather with old defense value 1. Many hits will deal damage only to leather clothing, despite metal/leather armor being on top of it, which is strange.

The trick to make Dwarves wear protective leather clothing under armor is to trace down in entire fortress all incompatible clothing like shoes, mittens, vests, caps and such and design to dump them. Even those, which are worn and owned by Dwarves. Then you wait a season, so there is no ownership no more on this removed clothing and you can sell it or atom smash it without more issues.

Currently without imports a fortress can't possibly sustain leather clothing industry for many Dwarves. Unfortunate thing, the only way to regulate how many Dwarves can live in a fortress is to mend the init.txt file with text editor. But if you are ok with mass importing leather, then it shouldn't be a huge issue.
