Noob questions
« on: July 31, 2019, 07:30:24 pm »

Hi All!

After years of avoiding, I've finally given in and started my first fortress. Between DasTactic and Kruggsmash I seem to have a pretty decent handle on things and things seem to be going well so far, but I do have some questions.

Why do my Fisherdwarves keep stacking dead turtles around my well? How do I get them to stop?
Why are my poultry convinced this is really the Domestic Fowl Thunderdome simulator? How do I get them to stop killing each other?

Aside from that my only gripe is the artifact making toddler who is going to just sit there and taunt me with his useless legendary skill for years.  ;D

1. Because they're fishing pond turtles out of the well. Pond turtles are rather nice in that you can literally channel 1x1 hole, pond some water in, and get a nice pile of fish/shells out of it; way more than ought to have fit in six bucketfuls of water.

Save some of the latter for moods, as they'll run out relatively quickly. Of course, they're not always present so hope for them but don't expect them at your next embark; I find mussles and oysters more reliable in being present near their bodies of water.

2. 'o'rders - zone only fishing. Also a way to effectively disable fishing on migrant fisherdwarves when you don't have any zones.

3. They're overcrowded, making them attack others when they're cramped too tightly with others. You can give them more space. As for existing corpses, as they were your fort-owned poults you'd need reanimation to butcher them - though dead chicks are so small they likely died first, and without time to grow would only give an almost-useless skull.

Weird. I didn't think they would spawn in the well itself. Most of the fishing related stuff I've read spends more time on over-fishing and how things don't replenish. Now I'm picturing an aquifer crammed with turtles. Does that mean they are going to spawn in the pool I was planning to build?

Re: Turkey dome. Huh. I mean that makes sense, but I've got them in a 6x6 room. Two rooms actually as I split up the chickens and turkeys. You would think that was plenty, but they keep congregating in one corner and then fighting. I mean, real chickens can be that stupid, but still... I'll check to see if I didn't accidentally make a tiny pen in the corner of the big pen.

I'd guess so. Unless you kill them all, I suppose :p I've seen mussels be infinite, but never pond turtles.

Ah, I considered mentioning it but declined. Do you have a pet-impassable door in that corner perchance? Forbid it instead. They're trying to get through it, thus killing your fps while killing each other (seen same behaviour with dogs).

(Reasons why they're doing it - there's a meeting area on other side, they may be trying to get to their parent, owner or animal trainer.)

Some of your dwarfs might like to eat pond turtle, so it wouldn't hurt to build a Fishery workshop and process some of the turtles to add to your food stockpile (if your autumn caravan brings turtle meat, you could buy that instead).

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.
