After 20 in game years with not a single elf caravan, and no contact with any elvish civilizations, I sent some stressed expendable dwarves to demand a 1 time tribute from the closest group of elves.  They were of course denied, but the next year I got a caravan from the elves!  All the fauna in my fort are undead, so setting up an exotic pet breeding system requires elves.

I assume this will work with the other civs too, but I already get human and dwarf caravans.

Tribute as in traders.
But how does elves connect to an exotic pet breeding system...? Is this what I think it is?

I've seen them bring animals such as unicorns and polar bears to trade, but no other civ does.  Also, 99% of what wanders into my fort is already undead and thus unbreedable.

I suppose I could also try to capture and breed the elves themselves.  What did you have in mind?

Probably what you just said there, or if you're more crazy, using captured elves as feedstock for your exotic pets.
