What do you do if you're on fire?
« on: May 13, 2019, 11:25:50 am »

So far, every time I get set on fire it's a game over even if I kill the enemy because I am unable to move. I pass some 40-60 ticks before I finally die, completely unable to move at all. I tried stripping off all my gear and such, but I can't tell that it accomplished anything. I've died near easily accessible water as well, just because none of the movement commands work.

Am I missing something? Or are you pretty much SOL once you get set ablaze?

When you're in a fire, you often can't move normally. Fortunately, even in such situations you can still move about with the "j"ump key. Hop towards the nearest body of water, dive in... and hope you haven't lost too much blood already.

If you survive the ordeal, you'll often find that some or all of your fat has melted off your body. This will make it impossible for you to bleed to death from heat damage in future, and will also make you look really scary cool. Good things. :D

Ah, well that sucks for creatures that can't jump, like my Saltwater Crocodile Man.

Seems utterly counter intuitive though. The first thing just about every creature does when confronted with fire, or set on fire, is immediately flee and/or roll around and try to escape.. Not deliberately standing still in the fire. That would take tremendous willpower/pain tolerance and a suicidal disposition. Hopefully that'll get refined, eventually.

If you can't jump, you can still hold the alt key and move. The issue with movement is that being on fire raises not only the temperature of the square you're on but all eight tiles surrounding it, and according to the game tiles that are above a certain temperature are not safe to walk into. Like the game won't let you walk off a cliff normally. Alt-moving or jumping ignores this.

But yeah, if it's an article of clothing that's on fire, take it off and throw it away from you. If it's your body that is on fire, jump in a pond.

Ahh, there's a trick that never occurred to me! I don't use Alt-move much...

Jumping in a pond also extinguishes anything you're wearing, yes?

It should. If it doesn't, it's probably a bug and you should report it.

Actually, if the flames are hot enough, the water will evaporate before it can extinguish them, leaving you in an empty hole in the ground. I've had that happen, too.

That is both hilarious and terrifying. I'm gonna go light some adventurers on fire now.

Losing fat no longer makes you fire immune either - I think since 42 you'll just die from the heat if you don't bleed to death.

Well sure, you don't become fire-immune anymore... but you do become a whole lot more resistant. It takes far, far longer to sustain lethal organ damage from heat than it does to simply bleed out from said heat.
