I said I didn't have time, but I decided to play around some more anyway.  I only had 3 dwarfs left from my original 7 but I decided to continue (we aren't dead yet!).  I sent them on a raid to a nearby fortress that had been taken by the elves to see what I could get.  There are 300 elves/dwarfs/humans there and unfortunately my raid of 3 dwarfs (I sent everyone!) was discovered.  My new military commander (the old one died of infection) killed 20 and emerged a great mace dwarf.  The other two killed a couple and everyone escaped unscathed.  No loot, though.

I decided to raid some smaller places.  I raided a couple of human towns and picked up a billion bar (which means I can make furnaces now) and a lead cage (which I hope will come in handy eventually).  I also got a gem and actually picked up a great axe, so this is a definite possibility for establishing your base.  At an elven retreat I managed to steal 2 books (written by dwarfs, damn it!), but nothing actually useful.

Stealing the books seemed to have annoyed the elves somewhat as they came to retaliate :-)  They sent 19 recruits and 1 swordself.  Unfortunately one of my dwarfs slept through it, but the other two managed to hold the fort.  With a few more raids on the elf fortress my mace dwarf is now legendary in the appropriate skills and has upwards of 50 kills.  Her buddy (the "Saffron Brilliance", best title I ever got in DF) is a master spear dwarf with 20 or so.  I've left the expedition leader at home lately because he has several mood levelling traits and I think is essentially unshakeable.  I don't want to lose him in a raid.  My 2 warriors are hovering on the brink of stress (this is after 1 year, but it was a pretty stressful year ;-) ), but the military commander is now "hardened" so I'm hoping that once she calms down from the elf attack she'll be good to go.

The band is up to 8 now.  The other 5 are bards and poets :-) (including a 98 year old human bard... I doubt he'll survive long enough to become a citizen...)  I still haven't gotten any mercenaries... I can't remember if I need to have a captain of the guard or something for them to come...  Mercenaries would be very welcome right about now.  My main goal in raiding at the moment is to get some cups :-)  I'm going to melt down some of the metal I've been accumulating (especially random bolts that are all over the place -- I've go keas in the embark and my visitors have been very helpful in shooting them down, but they really litter up the place with bolts)  However, I think the biggest thing I will need is a fence because the next elf attack will be.... fun.

Edit:  I forgot to mention, but I'm allowing my expedition leader to cook.  He needed a craft and I was buried in seeds.  So now I have about a zillion seed roasts.  Some people eat them, but mostly I'll letting them rot.  I've been thinking that to be more thematic, apart from brewing alcohol, we should really be eating meat, so I'm occasionally hunting to replenish the larders.
