Dwarves Look at Other Dwarves
« on: February 03, 2019, 02:28:15 pm »

What if dwarves could get positive/negative thoughts from seeing sentients with certain clothing or features, like they currently do with vermin? Beautiful preformers might be more successful than ugly ones, and hideously ugly dwarves might have to be hidden from the rest of the fortress. Dwarves might have differrent feelings about another dwarf's scars/missing parts, or the color of the shirt they're wearing. The same might apply to their observations of themselves; a dwarf who is disgusted by missing facial features might get low self-esteem or decreased superficiality after they lose their nose, or a dwarf who thinks scars are badass might become more confident after getting one.

This is discussed in the analysis of one of Threetoe's stories somewhere. There's a need to define (generate) the aspects of fashion/physical appearance that each culture finds generally acceptable/attractive first before deciding individual  preferences. And Therefore many more physical attributes than we have right now are required for it to make any difference.

It won't be a matter of all creatures in the world getting good thoughts from Toady's perception of what is/isn't attractive.

This could create demand for the underused clothing items, such as gloves and face veils, as dwarves with "unattractive" parts try to keep them concealed to avoid giving offense.

If this idea--each culture procedurally creates its own opinion of what sorts of body parts should/shouldn't be shown--is extended, it could result in widely varying standards of obscenity, theoretically running the gamut from Puritan to full nudity. Different reasons for covering/exposing various parts should be considered, too: Because it's too ugly, or because it's too attractive, because it's too hot, because it's too cold, etc.

Dwarf Fortress -- kind of like Minecraft, but for people who hate themselves.

Aren't they all in the dark?  Might everything they are seeing simply be the other dwarves heat signature?

Only if we limit the suggestion to an ancient game set entirely in a dark underground dwarf fortress. Fortunately this game has grown way beyond that. I think we're supposed to assume dwarves have lights somehow (gems, torches - details to come in only a decade or so).

But sure, what do plump helmet men find attractive? And Deep Dwarves. I'm sure they're not feeling each other for positive traits all the time. Nice voice, pleasant scent, heat signiture, all interesting ideas.

My point is that we have to take into account light levels and what they would be able to see in the dark.  Colour for instance cannot be seen very well in the semi-darkness, so details like the colour of people's hair would not matter unless the fortress is very well lit.
