Insanity issue (death from stress) with visiting diplomats. Bug?
« on: December 17, 2018, 10:23:58 pm »

Hi!

I run for last week my 15 year old fortress on 0.44.12 version and got myself a surprise. In past on 0.44.06 and earlier, I removed meeting area outside from my fortress, because human diplomat had tendency to smack my Dwarves and break their teeth for some unknown (men being too rude? lol) reason. During sieges I just moved the pasture underground. Once, I forgot to move it to outside and all my diplomats got cave adaptation. My bad. However living at pasture at door to my fortress cured them all. 0.44.12 introduced psychological trauma from rain it seems. Human diplomat panicked and run blindly around. So, I redesigned my dinning hall inside as meeting area. However human diplomat grew annoyed for some reason, threw few tantrums, which costed one Dwarf a tooth and some quickly fixed wound on neck. Then human diplomat grew depressed and become melancholic. In the end diplomat died of thirst.

However I suspect issue is not the rain, but that all my locations are set only to citizens and long term visitors. Diplomats take about 3 seasons long stays and in my fortress they are barred from them. Accidentally the diplomat died of thirst inside of my fortress's temple. If locations are not available and meeting took place, then how hard is for the diplomat to simply take a hike home? It is not like I am providing beds to rent for diplomats and their escorts.

This human diplomat was a human female bard, whom become a law-giver and for 15 years was visiting my fortress. She was ruler of entire human civilization. So why stay for 3/4th year in pasture before my fortress among all those other diplomats? If she wanted to sing in my tavern, then why not PETITION for it, like it suppose to work, but ending in insanity-drama inside my temple?

Insane and illogical ingame mechanics causing ingame diplomatic insanity. Is DF in Fortress Mode oriented now only for never ending wars? What will happen when Dwarven liaison will die too?

Also... Diplomats did not suppose to feel thirst during their stay. Insanity mood bug?

I think, I will miss her... It shouldn't end like that... It wasn't fun. Needless death from stress mechanics, which don't take consideration to weird stay-behavior of diplomats. Sad. :(

So the human diplomat visiting your fortress became the ruler of her civ while she was at your fortress as a liaison?

I've had liaisons hang around my fortress all year long.  The walk around, eat and drink, and I've never had any problems with them.

Did you have any caravans get stuck and not leave?  They will go insane if they can't leave the map when they are supposed to.  If you keep them locked up inside the depot are for two or three seasons they'll go nuts.  Caravans that get attacked on their way in will sometimes bug-out and not trade or depart properly without a little prodding from DFhack.

I haven't had visitors go insane from basic stress factors.  Also, if a liaison dies you usually get a new one the next time the caravan comes or sometimes the second time they come.

Also, I'm not sure I understand, is this a world you ported from 44.06 to 44.12?  Or did you just bring up the incident in your 44.06 fort as an example?  Porting a world across versions can sometimes cause unexpected behavior.

I have never seen a diplomat eat or drink in my fortress. Ever. Though they camp in meeting area, which is my dinning hall. All my locations always were restricted (citizens only or citizens & long term visitors), not letting casual visitors in.

A follow up.

As expected at beginning of following summer the siege began by... Goblins, whom out of blue (how? why? when?) are now at war with humans after 22 years of solid human-goblin peace. I packed all Golbins fast into cages and next what I see is the human new law-giver arriving as new diplomat with human trading caravan trailing close after him after our small chat. Chat was only about new ruler for humans elected and I noticed "W" in civilizations note. What about goblin-human war? Why not even one word about it? Those diplomats are bugged on diplomacy it seems. How it started? What caused it? There is 300 humans large village in world and 30 goblins large dark tower, besides my fortress with 114 dwarves. Rather desolated little pocket world.

Unexpected however was that I suddenly and sadly couldn't bury the former diplomat. I made special adamantine coffin for this occasion adored with many metals, total worth about 50k coins. Are coffins now restricted only to civilization members? I remember in past you could bury in them dead foreigners too. Now DF allows burial only of citizens or pest... eee... I mean pets. How odd. When this change happened? There was no notification about this alteration. Even wikipedia on coffins and burials tells that random travelers, merchants, diplomats, guards and likes should be possible to bury in fortress's coffins. The wikipedia seems is incorrect and outdated on this information.

I created well walled small 1x1 room with wooden door, there I placed corpse stockpile receiving from links only and put poor human diplomat finally to peaceful storage-rest.

Why I can't return this diplomat's body to human caravan? Is it because this corpse value is bellow 0? She had husband back in the human village you know.  How odd. This is so... bothering. I feel depression growing from this emotional stress.  ;)

Don't go melancholic and die of thirst please. We cannot bury you in our coffin. Unless you want to rot in a small chamber behind a wooden door.

Are you asking for actual answers of just telling a story?

As to the diplomat dying of thirst. I've observed something similar that might explain it. By complete coincidence my fortress has been build on top of a kobold cave. I've walled it off for now as it looks like there are hundreds of kobolds down there. None of them displayed any signals of thirst or hunger for the first few years until, for some odd reason, one of them went stark raving mad several months ago. It seems that condition seems to make them vulnerable to thirst. It went dehydrated within short order, and died not much later. The others are still fine.

It sounds like one, right, but then it is DF after all. It is yet another stab at the unbalanced emotional update. Death of this diplomat came out of blue sky. It suppose not to happen such way. Something with diplomats/liaisons overly long stays (3/4 of year? really?) is clearly not working, as it suppose to, when you restrict locations to only your citizens.
