windmill 101
« on: October 17, 2018, 08:22:45 am »

ok I am a bit confused about machinery and wind behaviour

I build a millstone underground, under a channeled tile

i then build a windmill above the constructed millstone

ZERO POWER

k

then I deconstruct the millstone and the windmill collapse, I build a gear assembly under the channel and a new windmill above

STILL 0 POWER

but... after a few click, i have 40 power

what is wrong or odd? does the wind comes and goes from the map (realistically)? or do I need a gear assembly to link a power source and a machine? I thought that if I constructed the millstone directly under the windmill I wouldn't need it

Have a look here: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Windmill

If you channel the tile you will need a gear (or axle?).

If you do not channel the tile and build the millstone second then you will not need a gear (although you will waste power -30 in your immediate case- from the windmill).

Wind power is consistent but takes a little while to begin after construction.  If you have power it will be consistent, although it is possible for a biome not to have wind power (latitude dependent).

Personally I build my windmills first without channeling then hook them up with machinery to whatever I use them for.

hhhm... once it was simplier to make it work  IIRC

but thanks
