I wondered about that (and am finding the armour wearing out a bit annoying) but I literally don't have a single one of my 20+ military dwarves wearing even most of their uniform. I have just eliminated bins from the armour and weapons stockpiles in case that was a contributor but.... :-(

Some good tips in this thread thanks.

My crossbow dwarves just wont keep their uniforms on... I have a really simple uniform of boots, helm, mail, leggings, gauntlets and crossbow. Its set over clothing and I intentionally don't use woodcutters, miners or hunters in my squad. They sometimes equip their uniform but seem to have taken it mostly off a few minutes later only to complain about being nude. Any ideas?
The three settings that matter for each squad position in the squad are "over_clothing/replace_clothing", "partial_match/exact_match", and "inactive=uniformed/civ_clothes". I would check to see if you accidentally changed the third setting for that squad, as it might cause the dwarfs to equip/unequip often. I am not sure, but suspect they will equip/unequip every time they are of duty and decide it is time for an Individual Combat Drill.

Have you turned off hunting labour? That can cause uniform confusion. Replace clothing is probably best if you have all of the uniform pieces available.

Rats!  I really thought that was going to be the problem with the off duty uniform but no :(

If you have any dwarves setup with Mining, WoodCutting or Hunting they will remove all their military armor and switch to a civilian outfit when not performing a military squad training or task.  This will happen no matter what settings you have arranged in the game.  I avoid using the 'over clothing' method when possible because I've experienced where some items of armor are just never worn, yet never have this problem when using the 'replace all clothing' and exact matches setting.

So I lost my fort to HFS and took it as an opportunity to start again and see if the problem persisted. I think I found where the issue is:  squads go offsite on a raid and some of my dorms seem to come home nekkid ? Anybody else seen this?

Ooook... they are doing a dodging demonstration, maybe later they will shoot some bolts

If you do care more about shooting skill, then not assigning barracks for rookies is actually a good idea. If the soldiers have assigned targets only, they train shooting much faster, and don't train hammering, which is bad at this point (so good they don't train it). After they are reasonably skilled, you may assign barracks. This will slow down training of shooting, but will start training of other military skills, including armour and dodging (the only skills which are possibly important apart from shooting). Unfortunately, armour training would be very slow for marksdwarves, so I wouldn't count on it to be very high, compared to melee dwarves.

Alternative is a session of live training from time to time, to keep the shooting skill above all other.

Never once has any of my marksdwarves trained hammering. Is there any proof of this happening? I mean an actual current version save, not some random "helpful" article.

Also, are you sure they're really shooting more with no barracks? Pretty sure there's no difference, they just pend more time idle instead of training.

And?
They won't train hitting each other with their crossbows instead of going to shooting practice. Not having a barracks isn't a workaround for any known bug in the current version. Just ensures that they don't train while they're not at the range.

cba to provide save right now, but should be pretty simple to test, just embark with two competent fighters, make 2 bone crossbows and armor stand and let them spar.

If you're observing marksman training rate unobstructed by barracks, and Saiko Kila isn't, could it be linked to difference in the way you setup them? Training works on activity system, which with locations prefers zones places first. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the case here too.

I have my marksdwarves set up with no workarounds (besides keeping bolts out of bins and removing hunting labour). They train in their barracks, they shoot at the range. They don't spar.

They gain hammering skill when wildlife interrupts them and they hammer stuff with their crossbows, as expected. Maybe the crossbow demos increase their hammering instead of ambush/archery skill, I don't know? Even if it did, it's not preventing them from using the range.

That's interesting - in my current fort, mine do spar, but I always give them another weapon besides the crossbow to improve their chances in melee combat.

Ah, yes. I give my elites a sword too sometimes. Then they spar.
