What's the longest siege you've had?
« on: August 02, 2018, 02:34:34 pm »

Usually sieges last maybe a season for me whether I kill them or they just leave. But in my current game I turtled when an early undead siege came and it's been almost 2 years. So what's the longest siege you've had?

A season? Usually I just send a bunch of squads to station around where they are and usually they're gone in a couple of minutes. So most of them are less than a week, I don't think I've ever had one that was much longer than that.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

13 month zombie siege once. I think being able to pick on an incoming wave of visitors encourages them to stay.
Had a 44.12 dwarf siege that lasted a year. Poor guys, constant rain sent most of them insane.  :)

Had an army camp outside my doors for two years. About that time i realized they werent going to leave so i tried to equip my militia quickly, then they finally got bored and left as i was preparing to send out a squad. Next siege slaughtered the entire fortress, unfortunately.

Early in DF2014, a necromancer and 2 elf zombies wandered on-site. They never actually left, nor tried to path into the fort, just meandered around the north-west for reasons unknown. I like to think the necromancer had no idea that I was there, he just also looked at the defensible wilderness I did and decided to set up his new Tower there. I'll never know though, because 5 years of "siege" meant 5 years of no trade or migrants, so I got bored and started a new game.

My longest in the recent version was probably by zombies. It was no more than 6 months though. Funny that most of the zombies were captured or killed in the first week, only two remained... But I had no military yet, and they were very vicious, and killed dozens of visitors (including mercs) and even more wild animals in this time.

I've built different contraptions to lure and cage them, but they were always distracted at the last moment by animals or visitors. It was almost supernatural. Then I finished training a couple of soldiers and got rid of the zombies (a vampire soldier got them, only thanks to not tiring, the zombies had no problems with putting down a mercenary, just like I suspected).

Two years siege seems a bit excessive, but it is possible in case of undead. Unlike normal sieges, they are not quitting when they number dwindle or time passes. Even a single zombie still counts as a siege, and it has no incentive to go back.

As far as I've seen, sieges (including necro ones) last either one season or one year (unless broken, of course) determined randomly, at the end of which they all rush for the edge (I've got a lot of turtling experience...). I've seen reports of bugged sieges that last longer, though (not counting the eternal *siege* indicator when there's nobody on the map, which at least partially was caused by a buggy DFHack script).

I think the reason mine is lasting so long (going on year 3) is that my defense setup was still being dug out and I ended up trapping half a dozen of them under a bridge before walling my fort off. So they haven't left the map but I still can't open my gate b/c they'll just re-route. Haven't been able to get a caravan yet, which really sucks since I didn't bring an anvil with me

If it's only half a dozen it shouldn't be too hard to catch them with cage traps, but yes, preventing them from lifting the siege prevents them from lifting it...

3 or 4 years. I don't think the undead goes away, or maybe the problem was the necromancer was in a cage trap. The undead didn't go away until I dug some tunnels they could try to storm the fortress through, they gave up and went home after several of them was chopped into pieces by traps while finally storming the fortress.

Had a 44.12 dwarf siege that lasted a year. Poor guys, constant rain sent most of them insane.  :)

Now that is a serious case of the new stress system working weirdly. Although, being actually able to break the invader morale with the help of the local (non-evil) climate sounds like a nice feature.

It was a mix of rain, horror at being attacked by visiting mercs, horror at being attakced by a visiting weretortoise (a visiting bard suddenly transformed). unease at the scattered remains of visitors and horror at seeing the remains of the previous dwarf attack.

Stress and tantrums ensued leaving several haggard dwarves. When the army finally left, a few were still hanging out wandering obliviously.

Actually nothing seems too strange about any of this. Would be kind of disappointed if it didn't happen. I guess it doesn't happen often because long-haul sieges are almost always zombies.

Well, once you bring up the details, it was certainly justified.

I like to think it was mainly the rain though. It did rain a lot on that embark and rain balance is apparently quite off right now.
