Sharp walls (?)
« on: July 28, 2018, 08:10:35 am »

I'm not sure how to explain this properly, but here goes.

I can't seem to figure out how to make walls like this : \
                                                                                 \

Whenever I try to do this I always get a snakelike wall like this : |_

Diagonal walls? Not possible, but some tilesets connect the pieces so that it can look this way. It's only looks, the game doesn't understand half a tile passable, half with wall, these pieces act like full tile walls because that's what they are.

oh you meant the diagonal walls.

well from what i know you can't, walls placed diagonally are actually liquid permeable and allows creatures to pass through the gaps.
certain tilesets does make it look like they're diagonally oriented, but they're still permeable.

on a side note, to make them "appear" diagonal, you need to place them diagonally with each other and no other orthogonal solid tile.
e.g.
Code: [Select]
#..
.#.
..#

# = wall
. = floor

sadly you can't make a double-layer "diagonal" wall.

Yeah, you can't. It's hardcoded.

Use ramps. If you have a big block wall and put a ramp next to it that lets you walk to the top, you've just added a diagonal wall to the block, right?

hes talking about diagonally connected walls on the same Z-axis, e.g. a diamond-shaped room instead of a square room.

Ah, I see. I was thinking vertically...

In that case...Um. What about trying building material colour to create the illusion of it? I'll take a minute to build something and post it...Ok:

I don't know if that's close enough to the aesthetic desired, but at least it's better than my previous post. Colours with better contrast and a bigger construction would make a better illusion of diagonal walls.

Diagonal walls are a feature of many tilesets. They replace the "corner" wall tiles with diagonal sections that line up when combined. Note that the walls still have an underlying "stair-step" footprint; you won't gain any extra floor space. Some players prefer the diagonal appearance, particularly for "organic" designs.

There are no diagonals in Dwarf universe. It is not the dwarven way. All things are placed according to the Great Grid of Armok.

(I find double thick works passably as a diagonal, ie:
XOOXXXX
XXOOXXX
XXXOOXX
XXXXOOX
XXXXXOO  O is walls, X is nothing or whatever.)
