The old 'military not wearing pants' bug
« on: July 23, 2018, 11:15:26 am »

Been a while since I encountered this.  When I look at the military-equipment menu, all items are ticked off.  However, inspecting an individual Dorf reveals that they are in fact, not wearing the assigned Greaves.  The stocks menu confirms none of my Greaves are in use.  Their current outfit is Helm, Mail Shirt, Breastplate, Gauntlets, Greaves, and High Boots.  Are there any fixes for this?

When items are ticked/checked in the military equip screen, it only means the item has been assigned (but the dwarf might not be wearing it yet). If they do not go to get that item when they finished up with their current job, it usually means there is a uniform conflict (a conflict with something already worn that prevents them from wearing it) or the item has become unpathable (it is beyond a door/gate that became locked after the item was assigned).

One dwarf without greaves might mean that specific dwarf has an issue, but the entire squad without greaves probably means there is an issue with the greaves or with the uniform settings for the entire squad.

Each dwarf's squad position will have its own "exact/partial match" and "replace/over clothing" settings (though legs are usually not a problem for either replace or over clothing settings). Check the settings for the squad leader and zoom to that dwarf to check current inventory, and see if something doesn't look right.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

That was the key.  Thinking about this, I examined my Forges.  Sure enough, there are all my Greaves, piled up against the mountain of bolts, cages, and helms I had made to train my Smiths.  Removing the forge caused all the items to explode outwards, and my would-be protectors immediately stopped training to put on pants.

Once again, pants vs trousers makes this hilarious. I either picture the dwarves going out fully armoured on top and all party below the waist, or successfully finding their Mc Hammer-style pantaloons and wearing those into combat.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Doesn't high boots basically cover the same area as greaves though?

Greaves are basically metal pants. They don't cover the feet, but overlap with high boots only above feet, below knees. They are also shaped, which supposedly means they protect against blunt a bit better.

I believe mail shirt + high boots makes greaves unnecessary, for full body coverage at least, since the shirt covers the lower body and upper legs.
I haven't heard that [SHAPED] gives better blunt protection: I thought it just prevented wearing other [SHAPED] items in the same slot?

There were too many changes in recent versions to be confident about protection. From observing how it seems to work for now, I would go for as many layers of good armour as possible without slowing down the dwarves.

However, given that there's no heavier armour piece than greaves (on pair with chain leggings) I would assign it only to super highly trained soldiers. I usually give bone greaves to normal militia.
