I've noticed some people in my military have recent practice at poetry or dancing.  If your goal was to make a fort an intellectual center, is there some kind of way to make them write poems, or recite them?

Build a library and a tavern.
For extra encouragement, send raids to steal books of poetry for the library.
For extra accuracy, use an adventurer.

I knew there had to be a way to do it somehow.  That all sounds excellent.

I wonder if a longer world history would have more time to write more poetry?  Or does the world max out on poems and then stop?

The longer the history the more artforms exist (they get invented over time, and adventurous bards learn forms from other civs. All the while libraries are growing as more and more scholars start writing stuff down.

As an adventurer, if you hear a poem, you will learn it.  I've always meant to retire a fortress, get an adventurer to learn lots of poems/music, go to the fortress and try to  recite poetry to dwarfs to see if they will learn it.  Haven't gotten around to it (or... I did it once, but my adventurer died :-) ).
