Ostrich is good! When I trade with elf, I got possum and skunk.

When I trade with elves, I almost always get something like a giant fly, giant tick, giant mosquito or the like. Insects weighing 2.5 tonnes on average. I would have preferred smaller animals like rhinos or even tigers. I think I've never seen a rhinoceros in DF, actually.

My elves never bring anything interesting, only things like foxes and maybe the occasional cougar, the most interesting thing I've gotten was a black bear

I used to get regular grizzlies, and very occasionally saltwater crocodiles.

Lately it's just small birds.

I got jaguars, leopards, and elephants from them in my most recent fortress.

I started getting fucking giant elephants. For some reason they were bugged though, and never actually attacked nearby enemies even when war trained. I guess there were good meat shields to get my military into position?

They were not meat shields. They were iron rations

Think war animals are bugged in general (except for raids).
