it would hatch regardless of material, people won't be able to eat it tho. As GOLD is not something anything can eat in game.

I'm not sure if you can designate it to be [M]elted or not. since it's an EGG item type which counts as food.

There's also LAYS_UNUSUAL_EGGS, which can be used to generate just about anything.
