I have the urge to Dorf, but quickly abandoned my attempt in the latest version due to the extreme effects of seeing limbs & other bits.

No workarounds that I'm aware of yet, but the next version is supposed to balance out the new system (at least to the extent that anything in DF is "balanced" :P).

So just be patient for a couple weeks at most, is the only advice I can offer.

It's actually pretty terrifying to think about having all of your fat melt off into grease because you started sweating too much.

I built a big corpse stockpile with a golden wall around it.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

In theory, you could probably get around the bulk of the issue by

1. Only put dwarves who aren't easily stressed in your military
2. Have drawbridges that can seal your base on demand
3. Build an underground refuse stockpile not connected to your main base that you can also remotely block off
4. Make sure your military all have refuse hauling enabled

Now, when the goblins show up,
4. Recall all of your civilians into the fort
5. Bloodbath
6. Seal the fort, so civilians can't get out
7. Set your civilian and military alerts to Inactive
8. Enable corpse hauling on the surface

Now your military will haul all of the gore into the underground giblet room. Then just seal the room, and the rest of the fortress won't see it. Optionally, if you have easy access to lava, have your military incinerate them to keep things cleaner.

Problems:
- Wounded dwarves will take longer to get treatment (though maybe you could get around this by having one of your military dwarves be a doctor, and have a smaller field hospital on the surface?)
- Military dwarves will still be traumatized, though they'll be seeing corpses no matter what you do anyway.
- Does nothing to help against seeing corpses actually in your fort, such as the inevitable corpses of berserk dwarves
- If you have to expand the corpse stockpile, you'll need to expose your miners to the horrors

This should help stave the insanity for a few more years though.

I get round that last bit by having then chuck the bits down a hole (corpse pile next to hole, dump zone over pile and pit). The pit leads down to the caverns (it doesn't have to, but I like to pretend I haven't just made a quantum corpse pile).
