This has bothered me since forever, and am just learning how to stop it.
(Note I'm using Firefox 48.0.2, and these features sometime get renamed or removed.)
  • Go to "about:config" in the address bar.
  • Click "I'll be careful, I promise!"
  • In the search bar of the new page that opens, search for "browser.link.open_newwindow".
  • For me the result appears at the bottom of the list. The default value should be "3". Double click it and change it to "1".
Now links on the forum (and other websites that engage in this practice) should open in the same window.

...wait, 58.0.2 isn't even out yet...  that means you might have meant to suggest you're still on 48.0.2? Dear god, that's like a year and a half out of date and isn't even an ESR, why?

I'm using a 10-year-old laptop with the latest compatible version of Mac OS X it will run (Lion) and the latest version of Firefox available for it. Would it be a good idea to downgrade to the 45.9.0 ESR version Firefox?

Oh hell, that's a whole other can of worms.

*leans in and looks closer at your computer*

*leans back stroking my beard*

*motions generally to your computer*

"Yep, there's your problem."
