Diplomacy

Diplomacy is a startegy board game designed in 1954 and set in early 20th century Europe. The players take on the role of one of seven great powers--France, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Russia, the United Kingdom, or the Ottoman Empire--and battle the other players for supremacy in Europe by capturing supply centers. It is practically impossible to win by yourself, and as such, the players must seek out alliances with one another. There are no rules, however, saying you cannot stab your allies in the back!

This PDF is the most recent edition of the rules. They're deceptively simple and designed to facilitate backstabbing and alliances, rather than the other way around. The game is well -balanced; although certain countries (Italy and Austria-Hungary, primarily) stand out as weaker and certain strategies (e.g. Ottoman-Russia alliance) are unusually strong, the game's focus on player diplomatic skill means even the most skilled of French strategists can be obliterated by a crafty Italian diplomat.

I hacked this together over the course of maybe five or six hours using the Victoria 2 province map. The cities are modified Civilization II industrial era sprites and represent supply centers. The soldiers are modified Napoléon: L'Aigle de Guerre infantry sprites. The ships are recolored convoy ships from Advance Wars II.

I changed the traditional colors of the map a bit, as you can see, and filled in the neutral countries, both done to fit my Paradox-warped sensibilities. In case you can't tell, England is red, France is blue, Germany is grey, Austria-Hungary is brown, Italy is green, Russia is dark green, and the Ottoman Empire is very light green.

Submitting Orders
Once the game has begun, I will set a date and time, probably on the weekend, by which all orders must be turned in. No late orders! I will begin the game again after I've processed all the orders, likely within one to two days. Phase lengths will probably be somewhat variable based on when I process them, which will probably largely be on the weekends.

Communicating With Other Players
Feel free to communicate with your fellow great powers on the forum or through PM. The traditional methods, used by conservatives, reactionaries, and monarchists of all sorts.

Alternatively, the Congress of Vienna has procured a newfangled Discord machine, to allow you to communicate with the other great powers at lightning speed. The communication method of liberals, socialists, and inventors of all stripes. The wonders of the modern world!

Roleplay a persona or communicate like a dry, droning math professor as you please, although the former is strongly encouraged. Please do make a pass at well-punctuated written English, however.
