My Miners Wont Mine, Why?
« on: January 13, 2018, 05:59:02 pm »

So I have 2 miners that arnt mining it says no job even though there tiles to be mined. I have them as priority 1 and 2 jobs. The only jobs there allowed to do are deconstruction and mining. I dont understand why they refuse to mine. I had a migrant wave so now I have 4 miners still no mining is happening however.

My list would go as follows:

  • What picks do you have?
  • What burrows are they in?
  • Can they even get there? (Locked doors, perhaps)

Generally I finish there.

No burrows my first 2 miners have picks but there no longer miners. So they should drop them and the new dwarves should pick them up? And one of my new dwarves came with a pick I have no locked doors.

All my miners are doing things. Except Zefon My Book Keeper, Broker, Expedition Leader, and Manager. It says he has no job. Before it said he was redoing the forts stocks. Now he is just in his room doing nothing. If I make him a mason he will do that just fine. He just refuses to mine.

Check his labour preferences and see if his mining skill is still enabled. There are weird automated dfhack things that can somehow end up turning off labors, because it seems helpful. Also make sure he's not got hunting or woodcutting enabled or is in the military, because uniform bugs.

If all of your miners refused to mine I'd also say to make sure you didn't accidentally toggle the designation so that it was only marking the area, and not actually designating it to be mined. But if your other miners are happily picking away, I guess it's not that.

Yeah, I got nothin' other than the already-made suggestions to make sure the labor's still on, and make sure they're not in the military.

Well, I do have one other suggestion: make sure that the individual shirkers can actually get to the area being mined. It can be surprisingly easy to accidentally erase some ramps, or get rid of stairs, or block off access to an area with a badly-placed workshop.
