Make someone sad (sad song thread)
« on: March 06, 2018, 10:12:13 pm »

What's the absolute saddest song you know (links appreciated)? Make this deeply broken individual ugly cry, if you can.

Well, there are different flavors of sad song. Romantic woes, general sorrow, quiet melancholy, dramatic upswells and such... depends on what you're looking for. One I've been listening to a fair bit recently is Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah.

Hopefully whatever's making you sad passes soonish, additionally.

This song always makes me super sad. But I'm not sure why.

The Green Fields of France. Perhaps not for everyone but I think it's pretty sad. The video is NSFW but I couldn't find one with better sound quality.
Mary of the Wild Moor. I don't actually care for this version but it was the best I could find. It's a classic country standard so lots and lots of people have recorded it. I have this in my casette tape collection along with some other songs as performed by a local band. YMMV.
Space Doggity. A play on "Space Oddity" by David Bowie. Again perhaps not for everybody but the inversion of meaning of the chorus from wonder to tragedy is pretty well done. Also, dog.

Honorable mention:
Will the Circle be Unbroken. Because I just finished replaying this game. The vocal style doesn't do me in so much as the lyrics do. The bittersweet ending of the game helps, but it's plenty sad even if you haven't even heard of Bioshock.

Even if you found a suitable opening, I doubt it would prove all too satisfying. And it might leave some nasty wounds, depending on the moral high ground's geology.

Baffler likes silver, walnut trees, the color green, tanzanite, and dogs for their loyalty. When possible he prefers to consume beef, iced tea, and cornbread. He absolutely detests ticks.

Scarborough Fair by Simon & Garfunkel is an obvious one.
