I've picked up Dwarf Fortress again after a couple of years. So far my fortress is doing well, though it just started. I've set up an hospital, and built a wall and a moat around the fortress itself, the elves were strangely useful by bringing me domesticated giant cheetah. I've stuck gold two layers down and am slowly working my way through the layer.

Suddenly, though, I've had an influx of job cancellation announcements- one dwarf wants to bring stuff to the hospital but can't, which is weird because I've made sure that it's easily accessible, and every dwarf is inside the fortress anyway so it's not like they're stuck outside. I have no idea what it was even about as the dwarf didn't seem to have anything in its inventory that belonged to the hospital.

I think I've fixed this by lowering the amount of stuff assigned to the hospital to what was already there, but now I'm curious. Anybody got any clue about why it's happening?

Spam of job cancellations like that typically indicate a pathing issue, whether it be due burrows or other reasons (i.e. a dwarf is in a burrow with a stockpile that requests a thing outside burrow).

Besides looking at burrows, I'd try to check that the dwarf, hospital and item all have walkable path between all of them.

Problem is, I have no idea what item it was- the hospital "needed" splints, crutches and buckets. I had job requests queued for all of those but I had trouble figuring out whether any got done. The dwarf (dwarves actually- I took the first dwarf off item hauling and another started getting the cancellations) didn't have anything on them save their clothes and weapon. The hospital is right next to the dining hall (I've yet to figure out how Inns or other locations work) perfectly accessible as there's always something like 20 idle dwarves in the hall. Though, come to think of it, the hall itself might be the problem if they can't leave for whatever stupid reason- one of the idle dorfs has a pet cavy who's starving to death and yet nobody's taking it anywhere it can graze.

It sounds very much like you have a burrow active (maybe unintentionally).  I've noticed the non feeding of pets in burrows (even when the pet and the owner are in the burrow).  When a dwarf cancels a job because the drop off is inaccessible, they don't pick up the item, so that's why you never seeing them carrying anything -- they know ahead of time that they can't to do the job.  As soon as they get it, they cancel it.

I did accidentally have a burrow, but there was no dwarf assigned to it and I don't think it was active. Oh well. Hopefully that might've been it.

EDIT: another problem I'm having is that one of the dorfs in the dining hall has been taken over by a fey mood. His only moodable skill is being a Novice Capenter but he doesn't seem like he wants to take over any of the workshops- or indeed, it doesn't seem anybody wants to build a fucking new workshop for him -.-

Re-EDIT: Ok, I got the issue- somehow one of the stairs leading to a deeper level was a down stair instead of a u/d stair. Which is weird because it was working before

Maybe you previously had a ramp that hid the up/down staircase issue?
Burrows (including forgotten still active civilian alerts) and physical path obstruction are major reasons for job cancellations. Dorfs stuck in trees and miners stuck at the bottom of shafts are common pathing issue variants.

Nah, earlier I had a 1-z moat outside (no water though), connected to the fortress by a wall of fortifications and one bridge to open/close as needed to gather the refuse from outside. But while working on it I also built an exit staircase to avoid my miners getting stuck in there while the bridge was drawn.

Then I deepened the moat because 1-z is likely not enough to keep invaders from climbing back out, and thus my fortress lost the only link between the topside and the lower side.

Moat and updownstairs replaced by downstairs? I guess you used d-z remove ramps and upstairs designation to remove ramps from moat, and upstairs from up/down stairs.

Huh, that makes sense. Thanks!

Ha ha!  I've totally done similar things before.  My dwarfs were standing around starving and I couldn't figure out why they couldn't get out of where they were.  In my case, I had a ramp, but at the top of the ramp I stupidly built a wall.  You can't travel up a ramp unless the tile next to it (one level above) is free.  I couldn't for the life of my figure out why my dwarfs were standing next to the ramp, but refusing to go up it.
