Benefit of having a king?
« on: August 31, 2017, 12:40:46 pm »

So my latest fort turned out to be the last surviving dwarves, and as a consequence someone crowned himself king shortly after embarking.

He is a burden, making all kinds of demands.. but is there also an upside to having a king? Searching wiki & forum indicates "no", but I couldn't find a clear answer from a recent source.

*ponders*

I guess it's beneficial if they talk to a dwarf who likes authority? They'll get a minor good thought on talking to a pillar of society.

Don't appoint someone to punish criminals and you can safely ignore the king *shrug*. It's mostly RP value.

If he starts making really inconvenient demands, he might be on his way to having an unfortunate accident.

Demands can be ignored with the only effect of the monarch being unhappy, while ignoring mandates and having an active injustice system is good only if you're interested in random !!FUN!!.

There is currently no benefit to having a monarch, although I think you need some kind of noble for diplomatic actions (i.e. getting elves to demand you stop cutting down trees). It will probably change in the future, but law and customs is a far way off, although there might be some traces in starting scenarios (which are only a medium way off).

Also note that if you let the monarch succumb to a tragic accident you run a very high risk of getting another of your dorfs appointed. You can, of course, keep killing them off until you get one that hasn't got any preferences (which cuts down on the mandate rate).

As far as I know, there's no benefit to *having* a monarch, but if your fortress manages to attract your liege through wealth and gifts, when the monarch arrives he's supposed to bring an entourage of well-trained fully-disciplined 'feels nothing' Royal Guard military dwarves.

hmm... I suppose the fort that currently has the king is considered the capital, so maybe you have some influence on what the dwarven caravan brings with it in you next fort (if its the same world).

Of course, one could also consider beeing THE CAPITAL a benifit, much like one could consider a giant, gem-covered throne room with adamantine and slade statues a "benefit"...

In my current fort, when the Queen showed up, her only entourage was the liaison; no Royal Guard bothered to show up.

Also, after they moved in, my fort stopped being able to order specific stuff from the caravan. So if you don't like dealing with the liaison every year, and don't need to order anything specific anymore, that could be considered a benefit of having a king.

Nah, mountainhome and king are separate, if linked.

Royal Guards are blocked by population cap.

You’re right, a king can appear by inheritance even if you don’t intentionally try to become the Mountainhome. I guess I was interpreting the question as: “is it worth it to intentionally become the Mountainhome and attract the king?” even though that wasn’t what the original poster was asking.

For the Royal Guard, do pregnancies count against the population cap? That would explain why none of the Royal Guard showed up with the queen, which surprised me at the time. -- Edit to add: No, wait, I'm an idiot, I forgot that the fort was already beyond the initial population cap.

If I remember correctly, the pop cap blocks new pregnancies once the cap is reached, but does not cause spontaneous abortion, nor do ongoing pregnancies count as pop, so pregnancies can result in a small pop overshoot.

I'm thinking that it could be fun if a king added some diplomacy aspect: foreign emperors coming to negotiate with you and so on. Allowing you to officially declare war on the elves, negotiate a peace treaty with the goblins, more detailed trade agreements, things like that.

Is such a feature already planned for the future? If not, what do you think?

There are thought about a higher level game mode (civ level, rather than site level, so you could engage in conquests, and so on), but I don't know if those thought have resulted in any actual plans.
Apart from that, Starting Scenarios (next up after the (probably several) Myth & Magic arc) ought to contain a bit of fleshing out in this respect.

Congratulations you now have a mountainhome. Mandates are fun. I would attempt to repopulate the world with dwarves if the civ is dead. that's just what i'd want to do for a personal challenge though.

I think this is definitely the next logical step with technological research being implemented via the knowledge arc.

If you get a monarch your civ isn't dead, so repopulation of a dead civ will have to be performed without a head mandate spewer.
