Psycotic dwarves
« on: April 23, 2008, 09:25:00 pm »

I decided to see how long I could last without using traps, or standing military, on a flat, heavly forested 3x3 square, with and aquifier 2 levels down. After playing so many fortresses, and reading some of the posts here, I thought that wouldn't be long. So I decided to show just how much I love elves, by making them a greeting tower just for them.

First I had to think of what I needed bring to make this fortress work. Total supplies, 200 towercaps, 30 stones, 1 steel axe, and lots and lots of food and booze supplies. For my dwarfs I started out with 1 woodcutter, 3 carpenders, 1 mechanic, 1 planter/herbalist, 1 trader/miner. I didn't start out with a pick because I wouldn't need to tap the aquifier until my greeting tower was finished...

Then after a year came some goblin ambushes. Forchunatly no bow goblins, and my woodcutter took up goblincutting for a while and earned the name "Kol Earthwhite the Hot Plait Of Valleys", before going back to being a woodcutter. My greeting tower had finnaly reached level 3 and I had completed the cistern and was working on the aquaduct to fill it. As this was the first time I had ever used mechanisms to connect the windmills to the pumps, it took me awhile to figure out how to make everything work and the water flowing. While I was pondering how to do this, another ambush appeared. I unpaused the game and set my woodcutter to goblincutter and set her to the ambush site. Soon I recived a message saying that my goblincutter had died... By being shot to death.

In a panic, I conscriped all of the immigrants that had came in and were chatting with each other. In a massive charge, the bowgoblins, and the rest of the ambushes were destroyed. Having lost a few of the dwarves, I thought that a tantrum spirl was now in order, as I didn't have any rooms set up, and all of the dwarves were sleeping on the ground and eating whatever came from the caravans, as they were are too lazy to do any work, much perfering to stand around and talk. Not one of them was unhappy... Ok this surpised me, but at least my fortress is still around.

After another year of work(ran out of wood, and trees to cut, so there was nothing for them to do.) some more ambushes appeared. This time I sent out my ledgendary peasants out to go pound them into the ground. I lost a few and again, with so many friends there would most defentaly be a tanturm spirl... There wasn't. Now I was begining to think there was a reason why they were all standing there and not wanting to do any work. This is untamed wilds and I did load the minral mod and Sean did say that there was a secret alloy in there... and I didn't look at the raws. I decided to ignore it for now as I had almost readied my greeting tower.

I decided to have my dwarves able to see the elves so that if they didn't like what I offered them, they wouldn't be able to leave. I wanted to see if they liked my swimming lessons better. This time some of my dwarves decided to go try out the swimming lessons, and being ledgendary talkers, they were too heavy to swim safely back. Now this is the 10th year after the start of the fortress. Without access to the ground, I thought that now there would be a tantrum spiral... There wasn't. And they still didn't do any work beyond a little hauling. I had also just finished my smelter, and now they did even less work, so I am getting a little worried.

Now I have ledgendary children following some of the ledgendary talkers. I have to wonder just what they talk about... Or maybe I am better off not knowing. Anyways here came 2 groups of bow goblins, with a local leader bow goblin. My ledgendary talkers rushed to greet these friendly goblins, who immdatly gave flying presents to my talkers, and were kind enough to save some for the children. Forchently, some of them were smart enough to avoid greeting these goblins, as they are known for surpirse gifts. At least all of the dwarves who do all the work didn't rush down. This had me get really worried as to what they were doing on their breaks, as they were all milling around my smelter "talking" and gain big musceles and all of the stockpiles were nearby...

Anyways, I finally had a tantrum spiral, and of the 20 dwarves that were left, 2 went melencoloy and around 5 or so threw tantrums, before calming down and getting back to work, or standing around "talking". I am now wondering just what they are doing. Once the tantrum spiral has started it ussally can't get out except for 1 or 2 dwarves. If only I could figure out what they are making and sell it. It ought to make alot of money, and then I could find someone to hire to clean up the mess left by the goblins that were talked to. Now I need to get some more stones to make mechinsims to release the water faster, as it takes over a season to drain the tower enough for the merchants to get up the trading depot, which happens to be made of wooden logs. All orginaly created just for the elves, and has been expanded to greet any welcome or unwelcome guest. With just a few lever pulls greet them with a wall of water.

Let me know if anyone wants a some screenshots of the fortress, and where I could host them at.

Edit I hope that helps
