Dwarves won't dig any further down?
« on: January 01, 2008, 04:36:00 pm »

My latest fortress happens to also be my most successful one.  I've lasted longer in the old 2d version, but I can't say I accomplished as much as I have in this fortress.  Unfortunately the game crashed and I lost the last couple seasons of my 3 year old fortress.

Anyway, I've been trying to dig deeper, but my dwarves refuse to.  I'm not really deep, yet.  I'm in the fourth level of the igneous intrusive layer and the next layer seems to have more olivine (which indicates more gabro, an igneous intrusive layer rock).  Of course, I have one level that has a combination of sedimentary and igneous intrusive rocks, so that next level might be a transition zone.

Is it a coincidence that my dwarves refuse to dig into the next geological layer or is there some other reason?  I know it's not that there's other work.  They've completed all other dig jobs and sit around idling until I designate something above that level.  If it helps, the deepest level in which my dwarves have actually inhabited (sorta. . . it's my tombs) is six levels above the problem level.

EDIT: Here's my region:

How much further can you go down using ">"?

The level they refuse to dig into is level 145.  I can '>' down to level 136, 19 levels below the surface (where the wagon was).

You have a save of the fort?

Also, maybe a stupid question, but did you designate any stairs in the below level?

*smacks forehead*  I had thought that I'd designated stairs, but. . . for some reason I hadn't.  I managed to do it right for every other level except that one. . .  IGNORE ME!  :(

MyLittlePonyBuiltMyHotRod, this is your first warning. I would like to direct you to read our forum's FAQ and posting guidelines before posting again. Specifically we don't use swear words here, and your picture of Stalin riding a Year3 Limited Edition Starflower inside a German concentration camp was both upsetting and historically inaccurate.

Hah, I have done that so many times. It always takes a while for me to figure out why my people won't go down a level to build the much needed food depot.

It's better than accidentally flooding your entire sleeping quarters while everyone is in bed though. (I swear it wasn't my fault, it was ninjas, big ones!)

[Healthcare Update Thread] Personally, I can't wait for doctors to get possessed and start surgically attaching axes to champion soldier's arms.

Stealth. It's an evolutionary trait.

I was like, ha, this looks like a pretty dumb and boring game. I was so wrong. Gentlemen, I have discovered true fun.

I'm happy to say that I've never actually flooded my fortress.  Cave-ins are another matter, though. . .

You think flooding is a bad mistake? I shot a ballista arrow through 3 dwarves,   a cat, and a dog. At least a flood can be an unconscious decision, there is no way to unconsciously set a ballista to fire at will...
