No sherrif / captain of the guard?
« on: January 01, 2008, 03:38:00 am »

Ok, so I just went through the entire sherrif phase without actually having someone assigned the job. It didn't seem to have any negative affects, and now I have the chance to assign a captain of the guard I'm wondering if there is any real reason to post someone to this position?

All the stories I've heard of the dwarves of the law is them beating the living crap out of 2/3 of the entire population which isn't really something I want to happen. So does anyone know if there will be issues later on without having anyone posted to this position?

Nothing major, just a minor unhappy thought.

One of the problems with not having a sheriff would be leaving the actual troublemakers free for the sake of saving a few innocents. As the game progresses, the dwarves that anger easily or cannot handle stress will become increasingly likely to tantrum in times of strife, possibly upsetting other dwarves in the process.

You must judge for yourself if protecting honest dwarves from unreasonable noble demands is worth letting potential murderers/vandals run wild.

If you get a hammerer, he will still kill murderers.

They will only lock up people after they did something wrong anyway. And because dwarves often break their own workshops, it doesn't help that the only person who can fix the mess is the person that got jailed/smashed to paste.

If the Sherrif/Ctp.o.t.G actualy issued beatings with their firsts instead of whatever they are holding(masterwork obsidian blades in my case) it would be more bearable.

Luckily, i haven't seen a hammerer use his teeth(and subsequently tear off the victims head) since 33a.

the only dwarves that ever get chained or hammered in my game do so because we didn't have enough fine pewter to make stupid fine pewter objects for my countess who, by the way, freaking LOVES fine pewter

2 dead and about 200 days served chained over this stupid wenches obsession with fine pewter

i keep my legal system in place in case anybody does break a real law, but, as it stands, its just a place for my nobles to get their lollies off on abusing innocent dwarflings.

Sometimes when the sheriff sends chunks flying out of the open prison door, across the hall, off the balcony, into the dining room, i start to wonder when movies like Saw and Hostel need to replace their "you need to be this old to watch" with a new "you need to be a this TALL to watch"

In my last major fort I had these.... waves... of goblin snatchers and other such nasties. The same fucking dwarves - useless migrant scum - would keep tantruming at the slightest hint of trouble, breaking things and... you get the idea. I really didn't need the extra hassle, so I assigned a legendary miner to sheriff without a jail ready.

The only punishment at Reignwall is capital.

To deal with thieves / snatchers, use lots of chained dogs at the entrance ways.   I do not think any got by my dogs once I had 4 dogs to protect each entrance.

As for trouble makers and the guard... I am not sure how needed guards are, but there is a side effect that can make demanding nobles punishments a good thing.

The first thing to do is keep "The Hammerer" under lock and key so he can't kill or maim any dwarf.   Then have a few guards but no jails or cells.   If a dwarf gets a punishment and there is no way to punish him, the sentence will be commuted and he will get a happy thought at having a reduced sentence.  I am not sure if a guard will ever kill a dwarf as a punishment for a crime (beyond a dwarf going berserk) where as "The Hammerer" definitely will wax more then a few dwarfs.

On the other hand, the nobles will go insane after a while if all their request are ignored, so they will either die or be killed at some point unless you keep them 'safe'.

For example, a countess at my fort was constantly pissed off by the dungeon master and finally went insane.  It was her top thought all the time.  You see, the dungeon master was really useful and never made any demands so I gave him a sweet room and a kick ass tomb.    The countess was really angry that a 'lesser' had a better tomb then her (she, in fact, had no tomb).   She started making a bunch of demands that were never addressed, and there was no jail to punish anyone.   The count-consort was also starting to wig out too.

Eventually the countess went melancholy and killed her self, and the count consort went nuts and was whacked.
