Activity zones, water souce - Any ideas?
« on: October 31, 2007, 02:04:00 am »

Has anyone figured out what makes a valid water source nowadays? No matter where I place my activity zones, the water indicator is always 0.

I'm guessing a brook or a river would do, but I don't have either of those on my map. The ocean certainly doesn't, and nor do any of the murky pools scattered about my map. Contrary to what I was expecting, I can't seem to get any water out of an aquifer either. (On a slightly unrelated note, has anyone found a way to drain the water out of an aquifer? My precious red sand is submerged, and I want to find out what you can use it for.)

The end result of this is that I can't fill up my ponds because my dwarves are all complaining about being unable to find water, right next to an ocean!

I, too, have a rather interesting issue here - my current fortress is situated on the edge of a glacier, so short of using the dwarves' own body heat to melt the ice (which, incidentally, can actually be done), I'm water-less.

Since farming is dramatically easier with the introduction of outside farming and the ability to farm without water, it's entirely possible to keep a fortress completely sustained on wine and plump helmets.

Well, at least my fort can pull it off.

I lived off alcohol for the first few months until I managed to build a chain, watch which point I built a well as a back up.

Also, in maps with non-frozen ponds, if you bring your 'look' cursor over a pond, it registers it as open space. Perhaps you need to go down a level, and define it there.

to get water out of an aquifer, Dig a channel in from the side. When it says wet stone keep digging. Make the initial tunnel at least several wide, once the damp stone is reached and dug into you'll only get a little ways. After that, the tunnel gets pretty full of water (7/7) and drains out into the surrounding countryside endlessly , at least as near as I can tell, havn't gotten far enough alon in my attempt to drain an aquifer to tell if it'll go dry but i doubt it.

Oh yeah, I've managed to uncover the water in the aquifer. But no matter what I do, it doesn't count as a water source if I designate an activity zone over or in it. So I can't fill any ponds, and if any of my dwarves get injured then they'll be waiting for water for a very long time. I would try building a well on top of it, but I hear they're a little buggy right now, so I'm going to wait for the next release.

Could someone enlighten me towards how designating drinking areas on aquifer channels fills up ponds? I'd like to refill a pond I drained, but only have access to a brook.

you have to designate the water and a ground tile next to it
