Played around with it at lunch today for a bit.
It's....getting there. The base game mechanics are pretty solid and the invasion mode I played has some good potential to it. But it really needs some better quality of life stuff.
Building castles can be a bit finicky. I was having a fair amount of issue placing down a wooden walkway behind by wall for archers to stand on. I'm sure there is a 'proper' way to do it that I haven't learned yet, but it was very inconsistent about when I could place wooden planks and when I couldn't.
Controls in general suffer from intent/action mismatch based on the camera. I often found myself needing to adjust the camera multiple times just to find a view that would let me click on the thing I wanted instead of something else nearby.
The bricktrons also suffer from stupid ai syndrome. With the added pain that the game is an RTS so there is no pause to issue orders, you just have to suffer through their incompetence and the lag between when you tell them to do something and when you see if they are actually doing it properly. Yeah, they're supposed to be derpy and cute, but they really need less micromanagement for an RTS.
The game also lacks any automated 'You are an archer. When I give a call to arms you go pick up your bow and go to your station' ability. Right now you can call your dudes to the crystal but you then have to tell each one to go to a weapon rack and pick a weapon. Then you have to tell them where to go once they've actually gone over and grabbed the weapon. Oh, and they drop whatever they were carrying when you tell them to get a weapon, so I had a knight get stuck behind a pile of logs and planks and no be able to get into the fight for a while. That was annoying.
I'd say there were a bit optimistic about it being version 1.0. I'd say it's more of a 0.9. The basics are there and it's almost a really fun game. It just needs that polish to the AI and UI to really get a smooth experience to be really enjoyable. At least for me. If you're willing to suffer through it I gather from the forums that there is some good fun to be had.
Also, this is my impression from having played only about an hour of the game in this version. But that hour wasn't good enough that I'm itching to get back in and learn it more.
But at least it sounds like they are working on it and a lot of my gripes have been brought up in the forums and at least a few of them sound like they are on the roadmap somewhere.
