Lords and Legends

As the first winds of spring blew across the town of Kirsch, they brought with them visitors from across the world. Kirsch had long been an isolated town, and the prospect of becoming a hotspot for lords, legends, merchants, and visitors of all kinds had stirred the town into an excited mania. Kirsch was not a large town, with only a few thousand residents, and it's most notable feature up until this point was that it was the only town in the region. Commerce has never been a strong suit for Kirsch, local items from local farms and local artisans, for sale to local buyers. Not this spring however. Merchants from across the world gathered in impromptu bazaars, taverns and hostels were booked to the brim, and adventurous sorts of all shapes and sizes roamed the streets. The air was full of strange foreign music, and smelled of exotic spices. Even as the cold night air brought bitter frosts, the burgeoning sounds revelry and anticipation rang out from around campfires and caravans nestled throughout the valley.

Most notable was the arrival of many lords. Kirsch was once founded by a Pioneer, a lord variant which specializes in pushing the borders of civilization into wild new lands. A dilapidated statue dedicated to the founder can be found in a small courtyard in the northwestern corner of town, but the inscription describing the founder and their achievements has long since faded away. In the time since, only a handful of lords have take residence in Kirsch. Of which, none really gathered any notoriety, history of their existence regulated to dusty court records and yellowed city documents. In the course of a fortnight, more lords arrived into the city than during the entire prior existence of the town. Lords quickly began exercising their power, and Lord's Manors began to appear throughout the valley. Noble lawns and hedgegardens appeared overnight in the valley below town. Some took the form of Victorian estates, others as small shrines or stone towers. Local carriages quickly began giving scenic tours of the valley.

But one question was on everyone's mind: "Where is the dungeon they travelled all this way for?" Information is as contradictory and exaggerated here as it was throughout winter. It's not that information on the dungeon was hard to come by, but the opposite. Everyone knew where the dungeon was, and would tell you for a price. Secret tunnels hidden in the cliffsides. Caves deep in the mountains. A fae portal unnoticeable, unless you know just where to look. Some claimed the dungeon was an ancient necropolis, others claim it's a lost dwarven keep, or even an interdimensional refuge. Soon, expedition parties started heading off in every direction. Some with local guides, others striking out on rumor alone. The race was on!

Mistlight Manor is a stately but obviously fortified structure of fine marble veined with occasional tendrils of black. The central structure rises well above the rest, with large windows at the top floor mimicking the glow of a lighthouse at night. Low but thick walls extend from the lower body of the manor in curving anchor shapes to enclose four circular courtyards used for gardens and rough work. Everything is crenelated and designed to serve as a further line of defense should the outer regions fall, and thus likewise serve as a symbol of protection and safety to those living under the protection of its Lord.

With a cracking of earth and a gust of wind Zyphren Earthbound had appeared in Kirsch. His manor, a slightly disheveled estate, had appeared shortly outside of town. A soaring edifice of rock and wood that was built up instead of out. He had come to town with two legends he had found on his travels, Merrick Amberwind, a mustachioed dwarf priest who's healing magic had likely prevented the young lords early death, and Arnold Verks, a swordsman with a no nonsense attitude that helps keep Zyphren grounded.

Thrul'muk's Manor sprouts from the ground, a crude fortification of sharp monster bones and rough stone bricks- overgrown with tangled vines that seemingly seek to drag it back into the grounds.

How exactly does running away work?  i.e., why should I buy a winged bell versus trying to hoof it?
