Oof. Mixed reviews out of a total of 5,000.

Maybe they'll learn to actually listen to their fanbase next time.

Really if they'd just call it "Dawn of War: <stupid subtitle implying esports>, it might have done better or been judged strictly on its own merits. Sticking on the 3 on there was a bald faced attempt to cash in on series loyalty while not offering anything in support of it.

Amusingly, during the Totalbiscuit livestream of Total War Warhammer 2, one of the questions asked was whether they would support e-sports.

The rep basically said "we shouldn't try to force e-sports into a game, but rather, it should be grown naturally. If it becomes a big thing, then you can support it, but Total War is always primarily a single player game."

I wonder if they tried to share that info to Relic before they tried to cram e-sports down our throats. They're both owned by SEGA Europe after all.

Consider that Relic probably felt the pressure to please their new owners, and might have said they wanted to do something "new and fresh" to distance themselves from THQ going down.

I think if DoW 3 had something going for the SP like DoW 2 did (characters, RPG mechanics, randomized gear, plenty of stuff to make you over look the terrible and boring map design) people might forgive the fact the game isn't really an RTS game at heart anymore. But I think everyone saw it as the thin veneer over the esports focus. Superficially serviceable but not really genuine.

It's not as fun as you think if there's not a ton of effort behind it.

(Youtube streamer chosen at random, ymmv.)

Listen, DoW I with mods is off the charts good. There is NO reason that a modern 40k strategy game should not be able to reach that scope and frankly surpass it.

This is the result of people making games for money instead of making games to make a game....

It's like every business really. Smaller ones usually have a focus on quality and customers.

Larger ones almost always care about the bottom line and nothing else.

The publishers don't give 2 shits about the game....just the money it can make them
