Gridworld - An evolution simulator with neural networks
« on: October 01, 2018, 02:16:02 am »

It's a weird 2D evolution simulator with simplistic graphics. The behavior of creatures is defined entirely by their neural networks, consisting of an input layer (stuff like eyes, antennae, energy sensors, pain sensors, etc.), a middle layer (various neurons to modify the input's signals), and an output layer (mouths, stingers, jets, fins, etc.). With some tweaking of the settings (especially disabling "Can mix"), the simulation can produce an astounding amount of variety. The creatures are about as complex as the smallest animals in terms of nervous system complexity. You can also drop highly customizable meteors that send creatures flying. It costs a dollar on Steam. Pretty much the only negative reviews are complaining about the performance or slow updates. Ask around on the Steam discussion (or ask here, but I'm not the developer) if you have problems.

Pros:
  • Highly customizable
  • Immense amounts of diversity possible with enough waiting
  • Decent AI with enough evolution
Cons:
  • RAM intensive
  • Slow updates

I wait for a time when someone rewrites original Space Quest 1, graphics included, from scratch, and gets system requerements of last call of duty.  :P

Rest of the sigs
The helicopter is rent apart by the collision, its steel unable to resist its inevitable reunion with the ground, and the meat within is smashed by the crumpling cockpit beyond any practical hope of recovery. What comes up, must come down again. Ore and ape, returned to mother planet's embrace.

Yeah, this runs into the same performance issues as DF for the same reasons: Lack of multithreading. There is actually a lot going on under the hood.

Gridworld is like an abstract, hardcore SimLife. My friend had a zombie virus scenario where an evolved creature could transform other creatures into its own type and would extremely aggressively seek them out to do so. Definitely can recommend.
