Stray Wolf was sleeping in a sitting position, left knee up against her chest, right leg straight, her sword crossed over her body with her left arm around it protectively. Normally she was a light sleeper, but tonight, Wolf dreamed.
A quiet, peaceful day in the lower valleys. Summer was the best time of year; the sun was pleasant, the wind was warm, and the monsters stayed in their holes and caves until the mercifully short nights. {Wolf} knew a little about how to fight, of course, all Eastlanders did, in case they were caught alone in the dark. But the sun was only just lowering, and she had plenty of time to get the sheep home. She finished adjusting her grey cloak as her companion from the Kuznets clan finished putting his own gold cloak back on.
"Tebe deystvitel'no nuzhno idti domoy?"
He sighed.
"Khotel by ya ostat'sya, moya zvezda, no eto dolgaya progulka domoy. Do nastupleniya nochi u menya yest' mnogo mil'."
{Wolf} smiled when he called her that. She wasn't a pretty girl; in point of fact it would be charitable to call her anything other than plain. But {he} made her feel beautiful. She stood on her tiptoes and gave him a quick kiss.
"Potom yeshche odin potseluy, chtoby zapomnit' menya. Nadeyus', my skoro snova uvidimsya."
{He} smiled back down at her, then put his arms around her shoulders in a long hug.
"Kak tol'ko ya mogu. Ya slyshal, chto vskore proizoydet klan; ya obyazatel'no naydu tebya tam."
{Wolf} closed her eyes and leaned into him as long as she could, but eventually pulled away.
"...Do tekh por. Ya budu dumat' o tebe."
"Ya tozhe tebya lyublyu, {Wolf}. Proshchay."
She watched him leave before gathering her flock and beginning to lead them back home, to her clan...
Wolf awoke with a start as something struck her, a ragged nail cutting skin and leaving poison in its wake. Instantly she shot to her feet, grabbing her wooden sword as she went and immediately dropping into fighting stance.
"Poshel ty! I'll kill all of you!"Of course she had dreamed of him. Sooner or later she would have. She had reminded herself of those simple days when she sang his song for Ghamina.
...She didn't know if she was angry at the undead for waking her up, or at herself for dragging up the dead and buried past.
