Farming questions
« on: April 16, 2017, 04:12:40 pm »

Do you have to specify what crop be planted each season in a farm plot or is there a way to automatically have it plant each season? How do you know when the season has changed? What are the animations that indicate harvesting and growth?

Just to be clear, you have to set up the seasonal crop for all 4 seasons, but you don't have to set it up each season.  It will remember from year to year.

There is an announcement when the season changes.  If you want to play close attention to your farms, you should probably change the crop *before* the season changes.  But you can do it any time you want.

When nothing is planted in a plot, it looks like '~' in the standard ASCII graphics.  When it has something planted, it looks like '-'.  When there is something ready to be harvested, it looks like the plant.  If you are curious to see what seeds have been planted, you can use 't' to inspect the plot (even though it is not a building).  I don't think there is any way to see how log it will take before a plant is ready to harvest.

See the wiki.

I don't have problems with farming, its easy and work without problems (except seed stockpile).
Use hmku to make a bigger farm plot. (i use 1x7 farm plots and a dedicated planter, if i need more food, make more 1x7 farm plots).

I do it like this also. I will build about four 1x6 plots and once built, will 'q' them and cycle each plot through 'a', 'b', 'c', 'd' to set them to different underground crop (the goal is that all the seeds get in the ground asap and ensure a mix of output. Later I will add one or two plots to the group and plant just dimple cups and pig tails (for clothing). Once that is done and there is a stockpile for plants to be placed at, everything else is done by the dwarfs. But you will need to build up the rest of the industry to process those plants, as processing plants gives you more seeds.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.
