I understand how to pause and such, but what drives me crazy is that every time I pull up the menu  to set an area to be mine, ect, it pauses the game without me telling it too..... is there anyway to disable it? because its really not necessary at times....

I doubt it, as that would require DF to keep reevaluating the validity of your orders constantly (what if a cave-in removes the tiles you're designating, for instance?).

I don't think there's a way to do this, but the game probably wouldn't work if it wasn't paused while you were designating or building or and of the other things that you do that automatically pause the game. Its just a feature that we've all gotten used to I suppose but it does allow for a degree of reliability.

Other game pauses can be found in announcements.txt. Tired of Mrs 15kidsalready pausing and recentering your  game? Get rid of it there!! Many things to tweak in there, and it's simple. Have a look.

I like the fact that it pauses when I'm doing something. If I want it to run, I stop trying to design the perfect u-bend, and sit and watch them work for a while. When I'm laying out precisely what to mine, I don't want the dorfs to be mining it until I'm ready for them to do so. It would be inconvenient if they suddenly gained the ability to do stuff whilst I'm busy doing layout.
