Dangerous Danger Rooms?
« on: April 09, 2017, 10:22:13 am »

I haven't played DF in a while but my upright training spear traps are really scuffing up my soldiers. They all have steel armor and leather cloaks and clothing. All the traps have 1-3 wood training spears.

It turns into a minor bloodbath with knocked out teeth, the traps smashing through the chain shirts and tearing the muscle after one round. Result is a hospital packed full of unconscious dwarves requiring crutches.

So did something change with danger rooms or am I doing something wrong?

To clarify Im using the most recent vanilla version of the game.

"A while" is a very imprecise term...
I believe danger rooms have gotten gradually more dangerous, but I've never used them. Coin-stars ceased to be useful for training early in the 0.40.X cycle.

The latest DF version introduced damage through twisting, so even if a blow hits a steel helmet, the neck can take damage, and so on, which probably makes things worse.

Damage now 'carries through' in most instances, danger rooms are now decidedly 'dangerous' due to this, and have been supplanted by pair sparring as the preferred training method.

The best way to train as far as I know is either sparring, from a high level teacher with good skills, or maybe even armored but unarmed captured creatures.

Yep two-dwarf squads worked great for training. My intent though was to train them mostly in defensive skills so they'd be survivable but easily recruited in adventure mode. They get arrogant and hard to recruit if they have high weapon skill.

I don't think two dwarf squads are needed anymore? I never needed to anyway. I just make 10 dwarf squads, but they also train sleep and eat in their barracks.

I was about to post boasting of a "zero incidents" danger room but I am indeed playing in 43.03.

I don't use that very much but I didn't suffer any knockout in it, with full steel gear on.
I cannot swear no bruise at all, but not knockouts at least.

Maybe I sent there people that already had some basic training?
It could be that I never sent there dabbling fighter/dodger/shield-user/armor-user/weapon-skill dwarves, but I had no such incidents.

Or maybe the difference is just the version we are using.

I don't do much modding, but when I do you can use anything I did for Dwarf Fortress in any non-commercial project. Let me know if you did, you'll make me happy!
