Dwarf cannot start in a dwarven civ
« on: March 24, 2017, 03:53:50 am »

I am new to adventure mode, and I am trying to be an adventuring dwarf from a dwarven civ, but all my start options are human civs. There are very few dwarf civs in my game, but the king is alive. In my fort, I don't get any caravans or migrations even though my exported value is over 2 million gold. My fort is quite distant from mountainhome, so that might explain the migrants and the caravans, but why can't I be a dwarf adventurer from a dwarven civ? Anyone have any clue?

You don't get migrants and caravans cause your dwarven civ is dead and that's also why you can't start in a dwarven civ. The king might be alive but he probably doesn't have anywhere and anyone to rule over and he might not be the king anymore. How many dwarfs does your fortress have, because if I recall correctly one of your dorfs should become a king soon.

You can't start an adventurer from a dead civ.  I don't know if anyone knows how to revive a dead civ, or if it is even possible.

I'm not an expert on this and I think information is sparse, but I'll tell you what I've seen anyway.  First, it is possible to have a king without a mountain home.  When a dwarf gets a master (to study some scholarly field), they will travel to where the master is and adopt that civilisation.  They do not abandon their old civilisation.  If the civilisation is destroyed (and the mountain home ruined), they can be crowned the new king.  However, they will be living in a completely different civ.

This can get even more complicated, because you can get a goblin to come and study with a dwarf, gain the dwarven civ and return to the goblin home.  If the dwarven civ is destroyed, the *goblin* can become king!  Humans can get even more complicated because humans can enslave other races when they conquer a site.  Those other races become part of the human civ.

Another thing that can happen is that a civ can be destroyed, but children can escape.  When they grow up, they return to the ruined mountain home.  From what I can tell, in world gen they just hang out in the mountain home as militia captain.  But as soon as you have world activation, they declare themselves king.  But there is no mountain home -- just a ruin.

So even though you have a king living somewhere, the civ can still be dead (which, as snow dwarf said, is verified by the fact that you didn't get any migrants or caravans).  Now, they thing I wonder about is whether or not you can revive the civ by making your fortress the mountain home.  Paradoxically, I think the only way to achieve this is by assassinating the old king.  Since you don't have caravans, there is no way to convince him to move to your fortress.  But I really don't know...

Thanks for the replies. OK I have played a bit more in this game, and I made some discoveries. The dwarf king, who was still alive, died recently. I believe the original, very first city (assuming that is the mountain home) was taken by elves and then abandoned.  There are two other kingdoms of dwarves, but dwarves, as a race, are the least populous (excluding the kobolds). Since the king died, a goblin DID replace my king –– the filthy thing. I have a mind to chase this guy down and take the kingship away from him. It would be interesting to see what happens. However, since my dwarf is technically a member of the human kingdoms, my character would have to become a hearthperson of my fort in order to be eligible for king? I mean it might be randomly chose, and if my character is not a hearthperson, the kingship would definitely not include my character in the RNG.

If I could figure out how to attach a file to the post, I'd show you some pictures of the Legends Browser race pie chart. I click the "Attachments and other options" button below the composition window, but no option for attaching files shows up.

The bad news is now that the goblin king's dwarven home town was also taken over by humans, and that set him to wandering the world. He did something "in the depths of the world," resurfaced to settle in a new city, then was spotted visiting a human settlement.  HAHAHA What do I do? How can I help the dwarves rise up and reclaim their spot on the map! We're losing to pitiful humans and elves!

Yeah, you can't store images here.  Most people use other image storing services and link here.  I'm too lazy :-)

That makes sense then.  Your civ is dead.  Yes, to join your civ, the easiest way is to journey to the fortress and request to become a hearthsperson.  You will have to do something notable to have enough reputation to succeed.  Also, you need to have a captain of the guard in your fortress.

A quest to track down the goblin king usurper sounds like a noble quest.  Good luck!

Thanks. I recently died. Long live the memory of Lorebite Drunkenstone. My dwarf first names is just an extension of what's done in game, slamming two words together. That last name was generated randomly.

He and his small crew were almost literally overrun in the wilds by a pack of 12 giant hyenas. Even with full armor and an axe, Drunkenstone had no chance. He did manage to become a militia man of my home fort and claimed an enemy human site for his own but alas he was not meant to be.

I found my captain of he guard, but it is so kiddy slow moving around in my fort with all the random visitors. When I reclaimed the fort, they're all still there and "hostile."

The year is only 155. These dwarves are pitiful indeed letting every race kick them swiftly in the pants like this.

Yeah, the "hostile" bug is really frustrating.  You can use them for live training your troups.  Or you can put a cage trap next to each of them.  Eventually they will step into them.  Then you can pasture them anywhere you want.  In that way they become guards for your fortress.

I thought I read somewhere that they eventually leave the fort, but I haven't experienced that. We did learn that a wagon has been missing for nearly a week. >.>

In any case, I have an update on my fort, Empireabbey of the Black Dutiful Panther of Anger. Since Lorebite was killed by a wandering army of giant hyenas, I received 2 migrations of 15 dwarves total. When I unretired the fort, I noticed the liaison from my Mountainhome lingering in the southern part of my lands. He seemed aimless. Next, a trade caravan showed up and the game text said "No outpost liaison? How interesting..." This made me think that the hostile people on my land were actually just missing and possibly thought to be dead. My outpost liaison was a goblin named Pis. I was reluctant to kill him for fear that the trade caravan would become hostile, but I did it anyway seeing that, somehow, goblins are taking over my kingdom through means of infiltration. He didn't last long against my elite swordsdwarf, Firebox, with something like 70 kills to his name. I wish Legends Browser showed a complete list of kills as it does in Viewer. After Pis was killed, there were no retaliations from the present dwarf caravan. Hopefully, I get another liaison soon.

I have a feeling that these migrants and the caravan are simply a result of reclaiming the fortress. It's a good thing though, because I had only like 28-30 dwarves surviving on their own. If it weren't for my traps, they may have been killed off long ago.

Solution: dfhack to make a char with all legendary skills and maxed out attributes.
Eliminate all threats.
Name it Dalek Exterminator.
EXTERMINATE!

It's actually not a bad idea... the hassle comes in when reclaiming the fort again. I still have crap littered all over my fort from the previous reclaim, and I am afraid that if I retire another adventurer that I will have even more hostile visitors on reclaiming the fort. Seems like I should just kill the characters on screen to end their miserable lives and to try to reclaim some frame rate, social consequences be damned! It's an interesting storyline to try to explain away: mass of mindless visitors arrive at Empireabbey, resident dwarves try everything to wake them from stupor until they've finally had enough of the mindless things drinking all their booze. The only way to save the booze is to eliminate the lost and mindless ones!

Small update. I've been cleaning up the considerable amount of nonsense spawned by going from fort mode to adventure mode and back. All my quantum stockpiles were broken (starting to think these are more hassle than they're worth). Killing the elves, humans and animals doesn't seem to start any wars. Some of the visiting dwarves applied for citizenship.

There should be, or use to be, a script in dfhack that allowed you to make any creature part of your fort. Itafrom like 34.11 and iirc was used for bugged noblea and liasions (when they were a elf King for example) I can try to dig it up if you like.
