Siege won't end
« on: April 07, 2017, 12:25:47 pm »

I had a small siege of zombies show up (10 I think) and get caught in my cage traps.  There aren't any zombies left loose on the map, but the siege token isn't going away.  Do I have to do something with those traps to clear the siege or is this a bug?

In case this is part of the answer, there had been a goblin with them.  He seemed to vanish when the zombies charged the fortress.  He doesn't show up in the units screen, and I don't believe he is in the traps either.  By vanish, I mean I didn't see him leave the map, but at some point he was no longer with the advancing horde.

You're probably subject to a fairly common siege related bug. As far as I know the reason for sieges to fail to end isn't known, nor is there a known fix. Sieges normally end after one season or one year (basically random which it is: I'm not aware of any way to tell beforehand). The "handler(s)" leaving/fleeing is fairly common for necro sieges, and probably doesn't have anything directly to do with the problem.

Thanks for the reply!  Do you think the siege will just lift on its own after 1 season/1 year?  Or am I under a permanent state of siege?

The siege state ought to be lifted after the normal 1 season/year, as I think that's the most common case.
I assume you checked the other units screen to see there's no free sieger around? There could be one up a tree, down a pond, or some other stupid place.

Thanks, yes, there doesn't seem to be anything in the other units screen that could constitute an attacker.  Other than those in cages, that is.

Something else to keep in mind. Necromancers that arrive with an undead siege are hidden/ambushers. It's possible that the goblin you spotted wasn't the only necromancer, and that there's still another one hiding somewhere on the map.

My experience with hidden necromancers is that they tend to rush into my cage traps rather early during a siege, but yes, it's possible one is hidden (and possibly trapped) somewhere.

You may also take a look at this thread http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=163671.0, but wouldn't recommend messing around with scripts to try to shake things loose unless the siege fails to be lifted when the one year mark is passed (and if you do, backup your save first).

Have to agree with you.  I'm not all that technologically savvy.  I'm pretty hesitant to muck with scrips unless all else fails.

But if a necromancer is hidden, how will I ever know he's there if he doesn't reveal himself?

You'd need to send a "militia squad" to scan the map by station the squad such that the map is searched through completely.

It's heavily forested.  Will the squad notice if something is hiding up in a tree?

I don't think detection range is affected much by a Z level difference, but I can be wrong.
