Yeah, I can't see anything that could remotely justify lack of diagonal movement, it's baffling.
I suspect it's because it requires only the arrow keys in a time when many people don't even have a numpad.

As somebody who just died in DCSS by hitting the wrong key when trying to remember what the diagonal is and wandered back in here to see if there were any bright ideas for something interesting that can be played without a numpad, easy mouse, or via pure touch, this sounds perfect.

The tutorial clearly states that you need good luck.

Game developers of all kinds state a lot of things.

I'm going to clearly state here that some of them are just half-assed attempts to cover their own asses.
