My dwarf won't not spar
« on: March 01, 2008, 01:54:00 am »

Usually, the question is "why is my dwarf not sparring?"

Now, my question is "why is my dwarf sparring?"

I have him set up with a crossbow.  He has a crossbow -- a very nice bismuth bronze one.  He has a quiver.  But he's not putting any bolts in it.  Instead, he's learning how to be a good hammerdwarf.

I have, apparently, 981 bolts.  206 are iron, 35 are steel, the rest are bone.

I have archery ranges -- in any case, normally if the archery ranges aren't up, the dwarf will just sit in the dining hall and look pretty.

...

help?

Edit: I'm an idiot that misses half of a post. x_x
Edit2: Here's an idea. Are you positive the target is facing the right way? Only thing that comes to mind...

Before anyone asks: I tried going to unarmed, the back to CBW.  He dropped the quiver and crossbow, picked up the same crossbow, and picked up a different empty quiver.

Haven't tried undraft/redraft.  That will be for next time.

Just checked.  Yes, they're set up correctly.  In any case, the dwarf should pick up bolts.

Undraft/redraft fixed it.

Undraft/redraft got him to stock bolts, and start firing at the range.

It did not, however, convince him that firing at the fire imp would be a good idea.  You know, the fire imp that just finished killing his friend the engraver.

Instead, he stood there.  And waited for the fire imp to notice him.  And waited for the fire imp to limp closer (the engraver did a number on the imp's leg).  And waited for the fire imp to throw a fireball at him.  And waited for the fireball to hit.  And passed out.  And woke up.  And waited for the fire imp to throw ANOTHER fireball.  And passed out.  And woke up.  And saw that someone more competent had dispatched the fire imp.  And, pleased with this success, suffocated.

Did you have him set to ignore wildlife?  I really wish that was on by default.

You're probably right -- it *does* default to ignore wildlife, and fire imps are wild animals that just happen to lob fireballs for sport.

Kind of stupid that he would ignore a named wildlife that was COMING STRAIGHT AT HIM.

Crossbowdwarves will only bone and wood bolts, I think.

Did you set your archery range as a room?
